Technovation CEO and founder Tara Chklovski was recently a guest on a #WhatThatMeans episode of the #InTechnology podcast with Camille Morhardt, host and Director of Security Initiatives and Communications at Intel. During this conversation, Tara and Camille get into the work Technovation is doing to drive innovation in STEM education and AI literacy. “The education world has been grappling with the definition of AI literacy because it goes beyond the memorization of terms. Computational thinking is one interesting lens for Technovation because it’s really about going beyond understanding how it works and being able to apply it to complex real-world problems." “Technovation participants are learning how to use large data sets, they are learning how to have varied representation in their data, and they're training machine learning models and using all sorts of different algorithms to come up with better higher prediction and higher accuracy solutions. One example is a team in India, these 11 year old girls are using Kaggle datasets to create technology that can provide better guidance to lung cancer patients because so many of these datasets exist now as open data sets. At foundry10's Digital Technologies and Education lab, we've been exploring how high school students across the U.S. use tools like ChatGPT in their academic work. Our recent focus groups with 33 students explored their experiences, opinions, and behaviors when using tools like ChatGPT. Their responses highlighted the reality for American teenagers today: a life filled with heavy academic loads and tight schedules where AI can help simplify tasks. We're excited to announce a blog series to delve deeper into these insights. This will be a space for more detailed discussions about how AI shapes student experiences in education. Exploring the future of AI with Yizhou Xu '26 and Janet Davis, Professor of Computer Science. Their research is revolutionizing the way we interact with AI, making it more accessible and user-friendly! 💻🤖 Since 2022, ChatGPT has become a widely used tool, but many users struggle with writing effective prompts. Yizhou and Professor Davis are addressing this challenge by developing an innovative AI-assisted tool to help users get better, more accurate responses from the chatbot, making ChatGPT even smarter. Yizhou, a Mathematics/Pre-Engineering major, is part of the 3-2 Engineering program at Whitman and will start this fall at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University to earn his Engineering Degree! This unique program allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Whitman and an engineering degree from a partner school like Columbia University, all within five years.
