🌱 We’re back with another green summer pick from the Allianz Research archive! 🌳 Did you know that healthy soil is critical for climate regulation, water filtration and #biodiversity? In Europe alone, we estimate the socio-economic value of soil at USD18.3trn. ⚠️ But climate change is damaging soil quality, which could create significant economic and financial risks for the global economy. Here’s where we need to invest to protect soil biodiversity 👉 https://ow.ly/UCLp50SC64n

👉 Six out of nine planetary boundaries have been crossed Accepting we are in the midst of a #polycrisis is the first step. But acceptance brings us nowhere without action. Understanding how a combination of different crisis affects your organisation, and how your organisation is contributing to these crises is key. #sustainability #polycrisis #materialityassessment #ESG #resilience
Humanity is now in a state of polycrisis. Six out of nine planetary boundaries have been crossed and it’s becoming evident that the climate, energy, food, inequality, geopolitical, and biodiversity crises cannot be viewed as separate anymore. But there is still time to turn things around, according to the Centre’s just published annual report. Learn more about our key findings in 2023 here: https://buff.ly/3JP7vpL

Perhaps I am a bit “sea sick” and missing the Eastern Cape coastline, but last night I read “The Blue Imperative”, a recently published report which highlights the often overlooked, yet critical role played by the ocean and marine ecosystems in the interactions between the climate, economy and human wellbeing 🌊 🏖 While knowledge and awareness continues to grow and expand on climate and nature-related risks, the risks posed to and opportunities presented by the ocean and other marine ecosystems must not be forgotten. The Report considers: (a) the contribution made by the ocean and marine ecosystems in regulating the climate, and managing and mitigating the impacts of climate change (capturing excess heat and carbon sequestration); (b) the impact of human activity on the functioning of the marine environment; (c) the ‘ocean economy’, the contribution made to the global economy and the importance of a ‘sustainable ocean economy’; and (d) the need for a better understanding of ocean-related financial risks. Attached is a copy of the Report 🌊 Thanks to the authors, CETEx (Centre for Economic Transition Expertise) and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment for this informative piece of work. #climaterisk #oceaneconomy #climatechange

🌃 How can cities improve their capacity to adapt to the waves of urban migration due to climate change and environmental crises? In this op-ed, United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) expert Jin-ho Chung argues that climate migration is not merely a challenge; it could also be viewed as an opportunity to support climate-vulnerable rural communities and the cities they settle in. 📰 Full article: https://lnkd.in/eqxiQ-eF #MigrantsDay #IMD2023 📸 P1 & P2: Aleksandar Pasaric / Pexels P3 & P4: Tony Lam Hoang / Unsplash P5 & P6: Daniel Powell / UNU P7 & P8: Afif Ramdhasuma / Unsplash P9 & P10: Thgusstavo Santana / Pexels

With an estimated contribution of 14–27% to the Global Ocean Economy, valued at US$407 billion, our Caribbean waters are a crucial economic asset. Preserving these vast blue resources is pivotal for the sustainability of Caribbean economies. In the face of biodiversity decline and the impacts of climate change, collaborative and sustainable financing is key. Debt-for-nature swaps offer a possible solution to safeguard our precious marine ecosystems. Check out my opinion piece on Devex in advance of World Ocean Day tomorrow, 8th June, to highlight the need to shift the trillions and mobilise the billions within financial markets to reverse ocean health decline and support the transition to a sustainable blue economy #worldoceansday #bluefinance
To protect our oceans and economies, we must shift from enabling harmful practices to supporting sustainable blue economy initiatives," writes Lucy Holmes from WWF on #WorldOceansDay in this opinion. #BlueEconomy #opinion #oceans
