The climate crisis is devastating our planet which includes our Ocean. We can save our ocean and today (8th of June) being the UN World Oceans Day is a great reminder for us all.   WHY do we have to protect the Ocean?   📢 Biodiversity: The ocean houses a lot of species and supports ecosystem services. 📢 Economic benefits: Millions of livelihoods across the world depend on the ocean. 📢 Tourism and recreation: Coastal and marine tourism accounts for over half of global tourism. 📢 Research: Medical research depends on invaluable ocean species 📢 Balance: The ocean is key to water cycle balance which is important for all life on earth     HOW can we protect the Ocean?   📣 Organise and participate in beach clean ups. 📣 Learn about ocean conservation and initiatives you can get involved with. 📣 Reduce plastics use (including microplastics). 📣 Research and use sustainable seafood resources. 📣 Reduce your carbon footprint and increase your handprints. 📣 Spread the message to encourage more people to save our oceans.   What else can we do to protect our oceans that I haven’t mentioned above?    Happy #WorldOceansDay! #BeatPlasticPollution #BiodiversityPlan #sustainability 

This years theme is ‘Restoring mountain ecosystems’. Mountain ecosystem services are vital to life and healthy mountains matter for biodiversity. Resilient mountain ecosystems are key for adaptation to climate change. The conservation of mountains supports SDG15 Life on Land and SDG13 Climate Action. All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. This World Environment Day, all eyes are on land restoration.   And we contribute to global efforts to halt land degradation and preserve biodiversity through projects that protect our planet and its people.   Some examples:   🟢 forest restoration in Romania to ensure that the country's green lungs are preserved;   🟢 sustainable natural resources and ecotourism management in Morocco to improve lives of communities in forest areas;   🟢 fair and climate-friendly lignite phase-out in Germany to protect people from the economic impact of the green transition;   🟢 climate adaptation measures in Jordan to address water scarcity and harness renewable energy.   The state of the planet affects us all. 🌊🌐 Last week, from April 16th-17th, #Greece hosted the 9th #OurOceanConference, reaffirming its commitment to transitioning to a #Blue economy and bolstering #sustainable development.   The conference addressed key challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, unsustainable fishing, and marine pollution, focusing on four main aspects: 🔹 Reduction of plastic #pollution, 🔹 Sustainable #tourism 🔹 Green #shipping 🔹 Green #transition in the Mediterranean.    In a bold announcement, Greece pledged to ban bottom trawling in #marine protected areas by #2030, becoming the 🥇 European country to do so, with plans to implement this ban in 3 of its national marine parks as early as 2026. Though there are restrictions in place throughout #Europe, this is the first outright ban in all of one country’s marine protected areas.   🌍🌱 The #oceans play a crucial role in regulating our planet's climate, providing sustenance, employment, livelihoods, and driving economic growth. However, they are increasingly endangered by unsustainable activities, pollution, and the impacts of climate change, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard and sustainably manage our oceans.
