Interim NSW VET Review released Oh dear... it's only been in recent years that so much time and many dollars was spent to make TAFE NSW 'One TAFE' - now another overhaul on the cards to decentralise again The recent interim report into NSW VET Review heard that: “TAFE NSW is challenged by undefined focus and eroding community confidence” with the NSW Skills Minister saying "...the single TAFE system had made TAFEs more inefficient and less connected to local needs" The report makes 7 recommendations around TAFE NSW's: *Role and purpose *Operating model (inc. piloting targeted self-accreditation processes) *Funding directions *Strategic governance *VET teaching workforce *Infrastructure and facilities See the report: https://lnkd.in/gytT_u2D

Government-funded VET students climb In the nine months ending 30 September 2023, 1,074,005 students were enrolled in government-funded VET in Australia, an increase of 1.7% from the same period in 2022, according to NCVER. Of the total, 52.6% were enrolled at TAFE, 4.5% at other government providers, 5.7% at community education providers, 34.4% at private training providers, and 6% at other training providers. The most popular level of education was Certificate III (528,440 or 49%), followed by Certificate IV (222,290 or 20.6%). Most training package enrolments were in Community Services (216,110 or 22%), followed by Construction, Plumbing & Services Integrated Framework (100,730 or 10.2%).

We are putting extensive help in place to support schools affected by RAAC. Each impacted school and college has a dedicated caseworker to help implement a mitigation plan. Mitigations might include using other spaces on the school site, or in nearby schools or elsewhere in the local area, until structural supports or temporary buildings are installed. We’ve increased the supply of temporary buildings, working with three contractors, and accelerated the installation of these to provide rapid support and minimise disruption. In the small number of schools with confirmed RAAC, disruption to face-to-face learning has usually lasted for only a matter of days. We will spend whatever it takes to keep children safe. This includes paying for the emergency mitigation work to make buildings safe, including alternative classroom space where necessary, and we will fund refurbishing or rebuilding work where RAAC is found. Where schools need additional help with revenue costs like transport to other locations, we are actively engaging with every school affected to put appropriate support in place. With the initial rush and excitement of the new term starting to calm down, it's time to concentrate on some of those things you may have missed - like the information from the Department for Education on preparing for Ofsted inspections. ✏️ Schools are inspected on several categories, including: 1️⃣ Overall effectiveness 2️⃣ Quality of education 3️⃣ Behaviour and attitudes 4️⃣ Personal development 5️⃣ Leadership and management Ofsted will ask for a lot of documentation, including timetables, strategic documents, records and operational documents. RAAC is a hot topic in school safety news, but it does not affect every school. However, there are other safety issues that schools should be aware of, especially those related to storage facilities. One example of the risks involved in storing items in roof voids is the case of Rosemead Preparatory School in London, which is described below. ‘How long will it take to get us to outstanding?’ A question asked when I moved from Ofsted to ROC Northwest. How long is a peice of string? Why do you want outstanding? There are many paths to an outstanding judgement- some take quick fixes or short cuts, but these are rarely sustained. Others are happy with their own performance and don’t need a judgement to know how much they are making a difference to the children they care for ❤️everyday. And of course are very much aware that any inspection is subject to the consistency and approach of the inspector 🧐. However the answer to the question is .. ‘when we have the evidence to support an outstanding judgment’ and this takes time. This home starts with inadequate in April 2021, moves to RI in June 2021, and gets a good in the following April 2022. We receive our first outstanding in May 2023 and our second outstanding in April 2024. We had strong evidence to support the outcomes children are making. We give children new experiences and opportunities. We push development, academic or vocational. We challenge to give children a voice. We invest in training and peer support, quality supervision and coaching for staff. Its a whole team effort and demands passion and a mindset that is open to change. An interesting and informative article by the RICS in the Built Environment Journal. So much is still needing to be done across many of schools that we work with to improve fire safety in buildings. Improving stakeholder knowledge around the issues must be the first step. Securing or allocating funding to implement change and improvement is often an altogether different challenge.
