#DidYouKnowFriday Did you know that French was once the official language of England for almost 300 years, from 1066 to 1362? Yes, it's true! After William the Conqueror took over in 1066, French became the language of the ruling class, while regular folks spoke English. But here's another cool thing: France also led the way in aviation! Back in 1909, a Frenchman named Louis Blériot made France's first-ever powered flight. And guess what? They coined some fancy aviation words like "fuselage" and "aileron" that we still use today in English! Fast forward to 1362, and English regained its status as the main language. This happened after some big historical events, like England losing Normandy and getting into a 100-year-long war with France. 20 years ago, #Concorde, an aeronautical masterpiece, took its final flight, gracefully gliding into retirement. For those privileged enough to have experienced its supersonic prowess, the memory of its exhilarating acceleration and breathtaking speed will forever remain etched in their minds. For those who missed out, well, you can only imagine what it was like to soar through the skies at twice the speed of sound, a sensation akin to riding in a Formula One race car …while sipping champagne. The Concorde's story is one of both triumph and tragedy. An original market sizing prediction of 350 aircraft resulted in only 100 ever being optioned and most of those options died during the 1973 oil crisis. Of 20 aircraft produced British Airways and Air France received 7 each and 6 were built for testing. Braniff International, Iran Air AT, and Singapore Airlines also flew Concordes at different times. In the end, the refusal of #Airbus to manufacture spares for the aircraft led to its death at a tricky point for commercial aviation after the 9/11 terror attacks. "The only thing that tells you that you're moving is that occasionally when you're flying over the subsonic aeroplanes you can see all these 747s 20,000 feet below you almost appearing to go backward, I mean you are going 800 miles an hour or thereabouts faster than they are. The aeroplane was an absolute delight to fly, it handled beautifully. And remember we are talking about an aeroplane that was being designed in the late 1950s – mid-1960s. FACT: Today is National Aviation Day in honor of Orville Wright's birthday. CONTROVERSY: There has been some debate on which state is worthy of the title "First in Flight". For those who call North Carolina home (such as myself) there may be some bias since the title is due to the legendary 12 second flight on Dec. 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. However, Wilbur and Orville spent most of their lives in Dayton, Ohio, where their outlandish idea of human flight were manifested into reality. It was there where those dreams turned to sweat that brought us to where we are today. QUESTION: I'm curious to hear from those who have a passion for aviation - past, present, and future - What state do you believe is most deserving of the title "First in Flight"? Today many may take these amazing machines for granted thanks to the wild ideas of those Wright Brothers. What also may be taken for granted is the crew members needed to operate these jets safely everyday. Do not settle for having "enough to get by" in your flight department.
