The EPA is considering some updates to the Lead & Copper Rules for our national water delivery systems (municipal, institutional, school/daycare). Public comment closes on February 5th. No amount of lead is a safe amount. The biggest caveat is that this expense can impact the populations that we are most seeking to assist. If US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moves forward with this regulation, they need to provide/make connections for/budget grants and financial support to the communities with these challenges.

I received this email today regarding the meeting last week discussing the CDPHE WQC's proposed Colorado protections of state waters. You can follow the first link to view a recording of the session, and the second link near the bottom to view a summary of stakeholder comments. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting on January 23 with Speaker McCluskie and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to discuss legislative and policy options to address the U.S. Supreme Court's recent Sackett vs. EPA decision. We are pleased that nearly 100 people joined in person and 275 people joined virtually. The meeting recording is now available. https://lnkd.in/gbgttJSU During the meeting, we discussed legislative policy options. We will reach out with further information about future large group meetings. However, a large group meeting has not been scheduled. The Sackett v. EPA U.S. Supreme Court decision removed federal protection of wetlands and other waters. Under that decision, the type of waterbodies subject to federal jurisdiction and permitting is significantly narrowed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) thereafter revised their regulatory definitions of "waters of the United States" to align with the Sackett ruling. Currently, the Corps issues permits in Colorado for dredge and fill activities. With fewer federal permits being issued by the Corps following Sackett, rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands in Colorado are at risk of irreversible harm. In addition, the decision leaves the regulated community with much uncertainty about the legal risk associated with their development projects (i.e., housing developments, flood prevention, etc.). As always the right solution to a seemingly obvious Arctic problem is not all that straight forward

The Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) ban in Arctic waters come into effect yesterday - 1 July 2024. But what if, new fuels now in use because of tightening regulations could have a far worse environmental impact in the event of an oil spill than the old fuels being banned? Our Public Relations Officer Jessica Cook explored the world of shipping fuels and spoke to Jon Arve Røyset, an expert working with PAME and the Emergency Prevention Preparedness and Response Working Group (EPPR). He is leading PAME's and EPPR's joint project on "New Low Sulphur Fuels, Fate and Behavior Cold Water Conditions". In the conversation, Jon Arve shares some interesting insights into how the new low sulphur fuels behave in cold water - and what this means for oil spill response efforts in the Arctic.
