“Do you have to have empathy to excel in HR?” My response: A resounding yes. The only HR role that I think you can do successfully without empathy is a strictly administrative role that does not involve interacting with employees often. Aside from a role like that, you need empathy to excel in HR. Empathy is the ability to understand and share feelings of another. You need empathy when you’re meeting 1:1 with an employee. You need to be able to listen to them and “hear” what they’re telling you. You need to be able to understand what they’re telling you and understand how they’re feeling. This will allow you to take the appropriate next action steps whether that’s related to that employee or the workforce as a whole. Without empathy, your response could land flat. Here’s an example of an HR professional who lacked empathy and how it impacted the employees. I once worked with an HR professional that supported a manufacturing group. The HR professional was always willing to meet with employees and had her door open during the work day so that they felt more “invited” to come by. They never did. Or rather, they did, then they stopped. Here’s why: That employee group worked early hours. The HR professional knew this, but never accommodated or was flexible with their hours to better support that workgroup. Employees from that workgroup would have to stay later than their shift to meet with the HR professional and during those meetings they shared struggles around timing of communication. One of those struggles being that they got closure alerts after they had already left their homes to come to work or even once they had arrived at work. The HR professional took in the information, but did nothing about it. The workgroup also shared that they felt segregated from the rest of the company because they didn’t get to partake in company potlucks and events like the rest of the organization. Again, the HR professional “listened”, but did nothing about it. Eventually, the workgroup lost trust in the HR professional because they felt they weren't being “heard”. They collectively stopped bringing concerns to that HR professional and employee engagement in that workforce slumped to an all time low. Flashforward to months later - that HR professional left the company and was replaced. The new HR professional came in early to not only be available to the workgroup they supported but even shadowed employees so they could see how the workgroup worked. These two actions helped build trust And the workgroup started bringing concerns to the new HR professional. Not only were their voices “heard”, action was taken, like tweaking a policy to include considerations regarding this workgroup. Because of this, engagement for that group increased drastically all because they felt they were being “heard”.

Recently, I posted about our New Employee Experience program and the lunch with a business partner. All new employees get to talk with their business partner, ask any questions, and learn more about what the employee relations business partners do. One of the most disheartening things I have heard in each of the past several weeks is "I am glad that there is someone in HR physically on site that they can talk to." Everytime I hear it, it feels like a punch in the gut. It isn't always practical for small businesses to have on site HR, so it gets outsourced. This is why being a consultant is a lucrative opportunity. It's great that there are still HR reps for people to talk to, but..... Face to face communication is incredibly important for building relationships and establishing trust. I absolutely love my role and couldn't be happier being an ER focused Business Partner. Everyone plays their part in HR but in my role, I have the privilege to be the one stop shop. Benefits, compensation, interpersonal issues, miscommunication, operations, payroll, etc... We are the people that get you where you need to go to solve whatever issue you are facing. Similar to a dispatcher in emergency services, we provide the first aid until you get to the person who can fix the problem. Some say we manage chaos... I say we manage.... almost everything. We are imperfect. We might not know every little detail of a particular situation or how to resolve it... Having said that, the one thing I can promise is I will stay engaged until answers are provided. Employee relations is a personality driven aspect of HR. You can't teach personality. Personality is what makes effective employee relations. It's not glamourous but it is necessary. I appreciate all of my partners across the different specialties in HR/payroll. Be Comfortable Making Difficult Decisions: Sometimes, HR pros have to make tough calls—like handling layoffs or adjusting benefits. It’s not easy, but they balance empathy with business needs. They’re like the Gandalfs of corporate decisions: “You shall not pass…without proper documentation!” Take Risks: HR isn’t just about following the rulebook. Sometimes they need to trust their instincts—whether it’s hiring a promising candidate or implementing a new initiative. Risk-takers, they are! Love Data: Numbers don’t scare them; they embrace data. Whether it’s analyzing turnover rates or designing compensation structures, HR pros know their way around spreadsheets. Be a Talented Multitasker: Imagine juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle—yep, that’s HR multitasking! They handle recruitment, benefits, compliance, and more, all in a day’s work. HR isn’t just about hiring and firing; it’s about nurturing a workplace where everyone can thrive. So, next time you see an HR pro, give them a virtual high-five—they’ve got the whole company’s well-being on their shoulders!

I wanted to take a moment to address a recent situation. We posted a video exploring the hypothetical scenario of Komolika, a well-known TV character, working as an HR professional and managing office workloads. The video was intended as lighthearted humor, but it has sparked controversy, with some HR professionals feeling that it demeans their role. First and foremost, let me clarify: the video was meant to be a "what if" scenario, not a definitive statement about HR professionals. It's true that some organizations have faced issues with HR personnel engaging in office politics, similar to the character Komolika. As an HR professional myself, I believe it's important to discuss such topics openly. If you're a CEO or in any leadership role, remember that HR is a crucial part of your company, supporting its backbone. You pay for positive outcomes from your employees. However, when we hear about numerous organizations struggling or ramping down due to poor management, it raises a valid concern. Why are companies, especially HR departments, lacking the necessary skills to maintain a productive and positive work environment? Our company prides itself on the fact that our employees remain loyal, even when offered double or triple salaries elsewhere. They recognize our organizational values and choose to stay. We also attract many professionals facing a lack of good work environments, false hopes, and poor treatment at other companies. They see the difference in how we treat our employees and want to be a part of our team. Many people ask why we create reels and videos. Do you really treat the logistics sector like a BPO center? Don't you understand how an organization works? Do you really think employees are robots who don't want to engage in activities beyond their regular work? Is it that hard to see the value in providing an open environment where employees can relieve stress and showcase their talents? Our organization is thriving because our employees are hardworking and dedicated. We believe they deserve breaks and opportunities to engage in other activities, demonstrating their talents beyond their usual tasks. This not only helps them unwind but also fosters a positive and creative work culture. However, our intent with the video was never to offend or generalize about HR professionals. We simply wanted to highlight a scenario with a touch of humor and sarcasm. It's worth noting that many HR-related reels and content go viral, often shared by HR professionals themselves because they see the humor in them. Let's try to be positive and not overreact to harmless jokes. There's no need to be the troll police over something so trivial. Thank you for understanding.
