🇩🇰🇸🇪🇳🇴 | Building slab track railways for future generations | High-Speed Rail | Future Mobility | Innovations | Circular economy | Sustainability | Growth and Development
WHY RAIL IS OUR SOLUTION AND COLLABORATING IS THE BEST WAY TO DO IT? Despite our familiarity with EVs, future electric transportation isn't just cars and buses. The rail industry is transforming railways into a high-tech, first-choice option, set to replace aviation on middle and short routes. The 19th-century invention of rail remains durable and is now crucial for electric mobility in the energy transition. Today, electric trains make up three-quarters of global passenger rail transport, up from 60 percent in 2000, making rail the most widely electrified transport mode. Rail transport's enduring success is due to its energy efficiency. Handling 8 percent of global passengers and 7 percent of freight, it consumes only 2 percent of total transport energy. Rail is the most energy-efficient and safest transport mode. As a result, new railways are being built and existing ones upgraded worldwide. Many EU states are becoming technological hubs for infrastructure and digital advancements, further enhancing railway safety and efficiency. Modern high-speed railways use advanced technologies like ballastless tracks and advanced signaling systems to reduce maintenance downtime, lower reinvestment costs, and ensure efficient passenger and cargo flow. Early involvement and close collaboration are crucial for the success of high-speed rail (HSR) development in the EU. These practices enhance project planning, improve risk management, and incorporate innovative solutions from the very early stages. Collaborations ensures various stakeholders such as investors, planners, designers, infrastructure, rolling stock, operations, maintenance and customer services to work together for comprehensive and sustainable outcomes. The adoption of Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) for energy saving in the railway industry over the last decade has led to a significant shift in the contribution of the rail sector towards more sustainable and efficient rail traffic. Since 2020, Knorr-Bremse has been collaborating with railML.org to advance the integration of standardised data interfaces for DAS. What is a Driver Advisory System and how does it save energy? The system is a tool that provides real-time advice to support train drivers to achieve better punctuality in the most energy-efficient manner. DAS can work on its own or be linked to Traffic Management Systems (TMS). By following the system recommendations traffic flow can be optimised and energy consumption can be reduced by up to 15%. Optimising DAS with railML Knorr-Bremse AG has been able to improve the efficiency of its DAS with the use of railML, a widely available and easy-to-use markup language, which has facilitated the streamlining of its operations as well as fast and efficient infrastructure- and timetable data exchange. Through this collaboration with railML.org, Knorr-Bremse AG has developed highly innovative DAS and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) solutions, which are being implemented on the Betuweroute, a double-track freight railway connecting the port of Rotterdam with the Ruhrgebiet in Germany. Eva Lohmeier from Knorr-Bremse remarked that by introducing Driver Advisory Systems, the maturity of digital ‘twins’ (virtual representations of a system) is continuously being pushed: digital maps and real-time traffic data are continuously improved, ensuring reliable data tracking, and GPS use. This incremental improvement process allows for the future development of ATO solutions with higher automation levels such as GoA4 (Grade of Automation 4), whereby the train is automatically controlled without any staff on board, making rail more efficient, accurate and reliable. A sustainable partnership Rail offers the most sustainable form of mass and freight transport in the fight against global warming. Strategic partnerships like these pave the way for improving rail services and optimising rail efficiency, contributing towards achieving net zero goals and making a strong business case for increasing rail’s market share and ensuring a bright future for rail transportation. #railML #Driveryadvisorysystem #KnorrBremse #railwayinnovation #ATO #energyefficiency #digitaltransformation

TransPennine Express, Hitachi Rail, and Angel Trains have outfitted a 'Nova 1' train with a battery system, launching the UK's first intercity battery train trial. The five-carriage Class 802 can produce over 700 kW of power with a 750kWh battery unit. The trial will assess the viability of a 100% battery-electric intercity train for non-electrified routes, potentially cutting infrastructure costs. This diesel/electric hybrid aims to reduce emissions by 30% this summer. This initiative underscores the rail industry's commitment to sustainability and reduced emissions. I am finding the world of engineering really interesting. Here is an article on The Engineer - "TransPennine Express kicks off first intercity battery trial". A TransPennine Express ‘Nova 1’ train has been retrofitted with a battery system predicted to reduce emissions on routes this summer by around 30 per cent. The project is a collaboration between Hitachi Rail, TransPennine Express and Angel Trains. Claimed to be the first intercity battery train in the UK, the five-carriage intercity Class 802 is a diesel/electric hybrid, with the battery producing peak power of more than 700 kW. Hitachi Rail says the trial will provide real-world evidence to inform the business case for a 100 per cent battery-electric intercity train, capable of running up to 100km in battery mode. #engineering, #engineeringnews, #futureofengineering, #sustainableengineering, #innovation, #technology

In the realm of railway engineering, where every decibel matters, Vibratec SAS has emerged as a beacon of innovation and precision. This is the story of how Vibratec helps tackle one of the challenging issues in rail transport: squeal noise. When discussing the complexity of railway systems in urban areas, the ubiquitous problem of squeal noise immediately comes to mind. This high-pitched, piercing sound, often emanating from the wheels and tracks, disrupts communities and poses significant challenges for railway operators. Vibratec expertise is dedicated to understanding and mitigating this issue. We employ detection techniques to pinpoint the sources of squeal noise within the railway network. The video showcases sensors and monitoring equipment installed along tracks and on rolling stock. These devices collect real-time data, allowing our engineers to analyze the frequency, amplitude, and location of noise events with unparalleled accuracy. With a wealth of data at our fingertips, Vibratec delve into sophisticated analysis. We identify critical points in the network where noise levels exceed acceptable norms and determine the underlying causes, whether it's track irregularities, wheel defects, or other factors. Once the critical points are identified, Vibratec develops targeted mitigation strategies. We collaborate with railway operators to implement these measures, ensuring that noise levels are significantly reduced. Vibratec's approach is not just about quick fixes but sustainable solutions that enhance the overall performance of the railway system. Noise levels in affected areas drop dramatically, improving the quality of life for nearby residents. Railway operators experience smoother, quieter operations, and maintenance costs decrease as the root causes of noise are effectively addressed. To learn more about Vibratec's success stories from various projects around the world and understand the benefits of our expertise, please contact us. PS.
