ASI certifies Eccomelt Canada against Performance Standard V3 Eccomelt Canada has achieved ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) Certification for its conversion of post-consumer end of life wheels into clean crushed and shredded wheels as an alloy substitute at its facility in Toronto, Canada. The company’s Toronto facility uses a patented process to convert post-consumer end-of-life automotive wheels into an alloy without the use of melting, chemicals, or water. This alloy serves as a substitute for A356.2/AlSi7Mg0.3 ingots and T-bars, and provides the basis for Al-Si-Mg type foundry alloys, as well as serving as a Si master alloy for 6000 series billet Casthouses. The facility’s product is used in castings such as wheels, chassis parts, and structural die castings of Al-Si type alloys, including components like suspension parts and knuckles, brake components, and structural castings. Revolutionizing #aluminium recycling in Europe.       Nothing less than that is the goal of the EU project RecAL, which is being led by the LKR Leichtmetallkompetenzzentrum Ranshofen of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and in which we are participating.       The project brings together 19 partner organizations from nine European countries to develop innovative recycling technologies for a circular aluminium economy.      As aluminium plays a crucial role in global #decarbonization, the project aims to unlock the potential of the raw material in an environmentally friendly and efficient way, in line with the European Green Deal. One of the major challenges in recycling aluminium is that the metal is alloyed with a variety of other elements that are virtually impossible to separate again. As a metal processing specialist, we are therefore focusing our project work primarily on the definition, testing and validation of recycling alloys for automotive extrusion.      Our common project goal is to initiate in a new era of sustainable production and reuse of aluminium with specialized alloys.      #BENTELER #circulareconomy #recycling #sustainability #wemakeithappen

The article discusses decarbonisation in the metals industry, including the two largest sectors - steel and aluminium. It references IAI's latest data on the decline in GHG emissions from the global aluminum sector - the first time production increased without GHG emissions rising. Data from 2022, the latest available, show aluminum production growing by 3.9 percent from 104.1 million metric tons to 108.2 million metric tons. However, GHG emissions declined slightly from 1.13 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) to 1.11 billion metric tons of CO2e. Miles said, “It won’t be a single technology” that leads to the industry's decarbonisation. We need to progress all of those pathways; one of them on its own won’t be enough. Steel scrap often contains contaminants/impurities that need to be diluted by #cleaniron in order for the scrap to be recycled into new steel products.
