UC Learning Lab inspires College of Medicine to SIT | University of Cincinnati Although the efficacy of the SIT approach for healthcare innovation has been written up in journal articles and demonstrated through dozens of new devices and drugs on the market, every so often a new generation needs to experience a “proof of concept”. We are grateful that University of Cincinnati’s Leaning Lab has been Systematic Inventive Thinking’s sandbox for such activities for many years. Just last weekend, another group of faculty members and students got together to “test drive” SIT to ideate new solutions around the Pulse Ox device in hospitals. While a short ideation session will never be enough to create an innovation that can be driven to implementation, it is a great format for demonstrating that the approach really does push people to ideate within the Sweet Spot – ideas that are disruptive enough to be truly exciting, while also being down-to-earth so that their feasibility is high. Tonight’s #ADVEiSCC dinner speakers are discussing the recent The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM: A Call to Action. The report, which has been highlighted in articles in Nature and Science, describes the ways in which the labor and contributions of caregivers are often invisible and undervalued, with a specific focus on the academic STEMM ecosystem. The report reviews policies and practices that support caregivers, locally and nationally, and describes best practices in policy implementation and design. It also highlights innovative practices and offers actionable recommendations to higher education institutions, public and private funders, and the federal government. https://lnkd.in/dp2ZjgR8

Why Is So Much Memorization Required for Medical School?? It’s no secret that medical students have to know vast amounts of information–everything from complex chemical processes to the symptoms of numerous diseases. A solid foundation of medical knowledge is essential to helping doctors succeed when they transition to clinical settings in residency programs and beyond. While it can be challenging to master the elaborate topics taught in medical school, tools such as mnemonics and other memorization techniques help commit the information to memory. As they called the names of eighth graders to award certificates with titles like "future neurosurgeon" or "future cardiac surgeon," I realized, once again, how lucky I am to have a husband who is a middle school science teacher. My husband invited me to a certificate ceremony for Kaiser Permanente's Hippocrates Circle program for the kids from his school. The program encourages students from diverse backgrounds to become the physicians of the future. What I learned: - Adult mentors matter to help kids to find their passion. - Seeing real-world doctor scenarios helps kids understand context. - Parents and teachers showing-up for their kids is crucial. - Having kids speak about their experience is critical. I was just an interloper, but as the kids recited the Hippocratic Oath at the end of the presentation ceremony, I felt one with them tying structured words to treatment goals. We are the ones who help the next generation. The future isn't just about money, it is about illuminating how we can care about each other. #middleschoolteachers #hippocraticoath #thefuture #stemcareers #jefstorytellingarts
