HSLDA has an interesting article about a homeschool graduate who was now a freshman cade at the United States Military Academy (West Point). You can read it at https://lnkd.in/ge3Qhpu3.
𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Once I commission after attending ROTC or a Military Academy, I’m eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁: After commissioning from a military academy, you must serve a five-year Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO), and if you received a Dedicated Guard ROTC Scholarship you must serve a four-year ADSO before you can start qualifying for the Post-9/11 Gi Bill.

We understand what it means to be a military student.
Kelvin, a US Navy veteran, chose Purdue Global because he appreciated an online school that has a faculty who knows what military students are dealing with.
Like Kelvin, you have demands, duties and responsibilities, and #PurdueGlobal is here to support you through it all.

I attended this amazing session that provided some valuable (and actionable) insights. It's always good to expand knowledge and pick up new skills. Thanks to Maria Louise and Lauren Dodd for organizing! Appreciate the effort that goes into these learning opportunities. #ProfessionalDevelopment#ContinuousLearning#goarmybeatnavy
Research and Instruction Librarian at United States Naval Academy
Yesterday the teaching librarians of the Naval Academy and West Point came together virtually for our first joint Instruction Day, 2024. It was a fabulous professional development collaboration and we learned a lot from each other. Thanks to my co-organizer Lauren Dodd (USMA)!! We share in a unique mission to train future military leaders and are committed to equip them with the information skills they need to excel. Thanks to all our colleagues who contributed to the day, and to those that presented Lightning Talks. And, as always, GO NAVY! ;)
A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals.
While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations.
However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man."

"Honored to interpret at the launch of a program supporting the Military College and Staff College, in the esteemed presence of the Chief of Staff, the Head of Defense University, and the Deans of Military College and Staff College. Translating in the intricate world of military jargon presented unique challenges, navigating through the precision of language in a tense yet vital environment. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this significant event bridging language gaps in service of a noble cause. #MilitarySupport#InterpretingChallenge#DefenseLeadership"
Prioritizing the Culture of Service, What Lessons can be Taught from Military Service at Navy League of the United States’ #SeaAirSpace 2024
Sailor life offers unrivaled opportunities for young Americans seeking purpose and adventure, but such personal fulfillment is only possible amidst a service-wide culture of respect, duty, professionalism, and service to others. This extends beyond those in uniform, to include strong support for spouses and children. It also extends beyond the length of one’s time in service, as each Sailor, Marine, and Sentinel is expected to maintain the integrity and strength of character developed while in uniform even after transitioning out of service. How does America develop the greatest Sailors, Marines, and Sentinels in the world and how will we continue to do so? We heard from the senior enlisted members of these renowned sea services and learned about the tireless work they undertake to ensure that the quality of our servicemembers remain the envy of the world.
