In-Office Dementia Test Just the First Step in Getting a Diagnosis Dear Carol: My mom is showing signs of compromised decision-making ability as well as some short-term memory loss. I understand that there are quick, in-office tests for dementia that people can take. Should we ask Mom’s doctor to administer one? My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, so we’re both skittish about this. I think it’s better to know if she’s developing Alzheimer’s, but she says there’s no point since there’s no cure. Can you give us a resource that explains how doctors approach testing an older adult with mild symptoms? Thank you! – BJ Dear BJ: My heart is with you both. Having seen someone you love live and die from Alzheimer’s or another disease that causes dementia, it’s natural to worry. Your need to take action is... A year ago yesterday, I embarked on a new chapter, transitioning from a corporate team to the caretaking team for my Mommer. Swapping projects, Teams meetings, and revenue growth for caregiving has been eye-opening, shedding light on the challenges faced by caregivers. While progress has and continues to be made, the lack of adequate support for caregivers remains a pressing concern. My Mommer’s journey with Dementia, or as we now call it, Dumbmentia, has underscored the urgent need for improved resources and care. Memory care facilities with long waitlists and overwhelmed professional and family care providers highlight a system in need of reform. We can and must do better, not just for individuals like Mommer but for all facing similar challenges. As we recognize September as World Alzheimer’s Month, I ask you to reflect on the struggles of caregivers and the inadequacies in caring for our loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Let's come together to advocate for better support and resources, ensuring dignity and quality care for all affected by this disease. Awareness + Action = A better life and world for us all. #AlzheimersAwareness #Caregivers #DementiaSupport #Mommer
