OlsAro, a Swedish agtech startup developing crop varieties that are resilient to environmental stressors, has raised a €2.5 million seed round led by Future Food Fund and PINC, the venture arm of Paulig, with participation by AgFunder, FLORA Ventures, Mudcake, and current investors. OlsAro’s journey is also supported by early backers including the founders of Oatly. Demand for food is estimated to rise by 50% by 2050, while climate change is steadily reducing agricultural productivity and the lack of arable land for cultivation. 🌿Start-Ups Decarbonizing Agriculture: 100k CHF LDC’s Prize Winner This year, I had the opportunity to judge later-stage startups at the Louis Dreyfus Company competition organized by MassChallenge Switzerland. Finally, after almost a year-long journey, the CEO of LDC, Michael Gelchie, and Managing Director of MassChallenge, Matthew Lashmar , announced a winner during the Awards Night 2023. The initial selection criteria were based on the added value to society, a positive impact on the #decarbonization of the value chain, and scalability. All startups were required to quantify their impact on CO2 reduction/removal over the next 10 years. 🥁Six finalists were selected among 521 applicants: LiveGrow Bio, M4LIFE, Neology, SeaStock, TERRAPRETA and xFarm Technologies. 💰And the WINNER of 100,000 CHF is SeaStock with their seaweed-based solution that creates methane-reducing feed supplements for livestock. Methane is 28 times more warming potential than CO2, and livestock, primarily cows, are responsible for around 14% of global emissions. That’s why SeaStock's innovative solution has such high impact. Oligofeed Secures 600K€ in Funding to Enhance Pollinator Health Oligofeed, a French deep tech startup, is excited to announce the successful closure of a 600K€ pre-seed funding round to accelerate the development and market introduction of innovative bee feeds. This funding marks a significant milestone in Oligofeed’s mission to enhance pollinator preservation, a crucial factor in maintaining global food supply stability. The funding round was led by The Yield Lab Europe, a renowned fund known for its focus on sustainable agtech investments. The alignment of values between Oligofeed and The Yield Lab Europe has established a strong foundation for future growth and impact-driven innovation in sustainable agriculture. The participation of experienced investors such as CCI Capital Croissance and Établissements Peugeot Frères further bolsters Oligofeed’s capability to bring their scientific advancements to the market. We are proud to announce that EIT Food Accelerator Network 2019 alumnus FreezeM has raised a $14.2m series A round, to disrupt the insect farming segment with a breeding-as-a-service large-scale protein production model.   The investment round was led by an undisclosed group of “industrial investors” and the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund), along with FreezeM’s existing investors and partners, and will help the Israeli startup build a hub of breeding facilities to supply insect farmers in different regions.   FreezeM, which currently has a growing team of 27 people in Israel and Europe, ultimately aims to provide a series of regional BSF breeding hubs to supply the global insect ag industry. The startup has filed patents around all of its tech, including counting and dosing the tiny neonates, so customers get exactly what they require. Currently shipping from sites in Israel and Germany, FreezeM's next goal is to expand their market reach, their production, and to close large off-take agreements with customers.    “We envisage one hub in each continent. There is already big traction from the market, and I think we’ll see a gradual shift from the vertically integrated approach that the first companies in the market took, because now it’s much more difficult to raise money for CapEx. Everybody is focused on showing revenues and profitability. And this is aligned with our strategy, because we can save insect companies all the hassle and risk and CapEx involved with setting up their own breeding hubs. The insect ag industry is at a turning point. You see more players entering the field to become producers, not just to test the market. 🌾💰 The AgTech sector secures fresh funding boost. OlsAro, a Swedish agtech startup, has raised €2.5M to further develop its AI-enabled crop-breeding platform, focusing on creating wheat varieties resilient to climate stresses like salt, heat, and drought. The funding round was led by Future Food Fund and PINC, Paulig Group’s venture arm, with participation from AgFunder, FLORA Ventures, and Mudcake, among others. OlsAro aims to address food security issues exacerbated by climate change, particularly in regions like Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Africa. The startup's engineered wheat varieties are designed to thrive in challenging conditions, such as saline land left fallow during dry seasons. Initial tests in Bangladesh have shown a 52% increase in wheat yields, allowing farmers to add an extra crop season to their cycle. Marika King, Head of PINC, praised OlsAro's results, highlighting the potential of their platform to accelerate solutions for wheat and other crops in the future. OlsAro's genetic crop breeding platform, founded by Henrik Aronsson and Olof Olsson, uses AI to develop wheat varieties suited to harsh climates. The company claims its platform can speed up the development of new wheat varieties three times faster than traditional methods, leveraging over a decade of research and a diverse proprietary wheat collection. The ultimate goal is to adapt this technology to benefit a wide range of crops, addressing the broader impacts of climate change on arable land. The investment from PINC will help OlsAro scale up its technological and commercial efforts. The company has already secured a commercial contract for its salt-tolerant wheat in Bangladesh and is conducting field trials in Pakistan, Kenya, Oman, and Nepal. OlsAro plans to expand into Australia and India next, targeting markets with extensive agricultural land affected by salinity degradation. CEO Elén Faxö expressed gratitude for the investor consortium's support and believes their experience and networks will help OlsAro make a significant impact on global food security. Their non-GMO breeding platform is optimised for perennial crops, accelerating the selection and crossing of plants by pushing the boundaries of in vitro culture.
