The packaging industry is poised to grow by 21% over the next three years according to research by global consultants Bain & Co. A key drive is expected to be sustainability as consumers show a keen preference for recyclability. The strength of the sector is attracting the interest of investment funds, with twice as much merger and acquisition activity in packaging than in different industries of similar size. Some of this acquisition is about filling gaps in a portfolio either by sector or by geography. Some of it is driven by private equity businesses that are putting together groups to exploit the expected growth in the sector.
