THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT *DEATH* WHEN IT’S NEEDED: Full disclosure - as a medical student and then as a medical resident, I was indirectly taught to not talk about death. Because... as the thinking went, talking about it would be an admission of failure on the part of the medical establishment. Oh, how wrong was - and still is - that approach. As this essay from JAMA shows, patients and family members are harmed when we refuse to talk about it in an open, honest manner. This take has stirred up some arguments before 😅 - yet I still firmly stand by it: The patient journey you offer is more important than your clinical expertise. It’s the patient journey that makes it an outstanding experience! Think carefully about how you’re: - greeting your patients coming in - speaking to your patients on the phone - engaging with your patients online - and when they're in the waiting room Consider all the small touches you could offer to enhance their experience because ultimately the patient experience is the vehicle through which they perceive their total clinical experience with you!
