So, how prevalent is ecDNA in cancer? ecDNA are present in about 14% of cancer at diagnosis and up to 32% of advanced cancers, across multiple tumor types. According to the American Cancer Society, the estimated number of deaths in the US from ovarian cancer in 2023 alone will be over 13,000, 2.2% of all cancer deaths this year. Nearly 20,000 new cases of ovarian cancer will be detected. When ovarian cancer is found early, about 94% of patients live longer than 5 years after diagnosis. I wanted to begin Bladder Cancer Awareness Month on a positive note, despite the heavy subject matter. With a global mortality rate of 2.6%, bladder cancer can be daunting for patients, HCPs, and researchers. However, more tools are being added to our arsenal all the time. According to a recent OncLive Peer Exchange, neoadjuvant immunotherapies are showing promise in treating muscle-invasive bladder cancer. For example, preclinical findings from the GDFATHER-NEO trial suggest that GDF-15 neutralisation could help overcome immune escapes and immunosuppression techniques. If phase 2 data supports this, this could open up new avenues for safer and more effective treatment, boosting hope and quality of care for patients.
