It's National Volunteer Week!! Celebrate with us as we shout out another pivotal member of our community: Q. What is your name?: A. Wanda Griffin Q. How long have you been involved with AFSP?: A. Two years Q. What is your volunteer role within AFSP?: A. I participate in local tabling events (Bergen County Stand Down, Jersey City Pride Festival, In Their Shoes, Ramsey Farmer’s Market, etc.). I also hold two roles for the Bergen County Out of the Darkness Walk committee member and company sponsor lead. Q. What brought you to AFSP?: A. I was introduced to the AFSP in 2019 by a colleague when I volunteered to serve as a panelist with my company. I attended my first AFSP event in 2022, Finding Hope: Guidance to Supporting Those At Risk, and became a volunteer shortly after that. I felt it was important to give back to an organization that has helped me as a family member/caregiver of a suicide survivor. Connecting with others who understood what I was going through, and getting resources and support was so critical for my personal mental health. What the AFSP has provided; was a game changer. Q. Why is your work with AFSP important to you?: A. I don’t want anyone to ever feel like they are alone. There are people who care; even those you don’t know. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience that firsthand through AFSP. There is power in numbers and the more of us that raise awareness; the more we can break the stigma. Suicide has been a part of my life for such a long time and I wouldn’t want that for future generations. A hug, listening, caring, showing empathy, acknowledgment, being mindful, kind, etc., those little things can make a huge difference to someone who is struggling. With the help of the AFSP, I’ve been able to become more aware of how important these small acts of kindness are.

We all know that mental health is a serious issue in Australia. The percentage of people aged 16-24 years who experienced a mental health disorder in the previous 12 months has increased from 26% in 2007 to 39% in the period between 2020 and 2022. Governments at all levels, not for profit organisations, business and the community all have a role to play in responding to this epidemic that impacts on all communities across our country. One way of doing that is to give children and young people the resources and support they need to deal with feelings of anxiety, depression, bullying, self-harm and other mental health issues. The bkinderfoundation.org is one organisation doing just that. Through early intervention and prevention programs the b kinder foundation is helping children in their pivotal years by encouraging them to become kinder, more empathetic and more compassionate. Check out the foundations website and donate for a kinder world. #kindness #wellbeing #mentalhealth #donateforakinderworld

It's BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month! Fostering empathy in young children is crucial for their emotional development. Why? Because empathy helps children understand their own emotions and connect with others in meaningful ways. Responsive caregiving, a key element in fostering empathy, is critical to building securely attached relationships for infants and toddlers. Preschoolers benefit from reading books about feelings and being encouraged to express their emotions openly. As for kindergarten and first graders, discussing feelings and using real-life examples can significantly expand their emotional vocabulary. Want to learn our recommended strategies? Title: Embracing Transparency: Navigating the Depths of Mental Health Advocacy As the founder of a nonprofit in the mental health sector, I find profound fulfillment in the soul-enriching work we embark upon daily. This journey is deeply personal, rooted in my own challenges with mental health. Honesty and transparency are the cornerstones of our mission, creating a space free of judgment. In the realm of mental health advocacy, the power of shared experiences cannot be overstated. Opening up about my own struggles has been both cathartic and empowering, allowing me to connect on a profound level with those we aim to support. It's a reminder that vulnerability can be a source of strength. Our nonprofit is a testament to the transformative impact that honesty can have. By shedding light on the shadows of mental health, we strive to dismantle stigma and create a supportive community. Every step we take is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Navigating the complexities of mental health advocacy requires unwavering dedication. Challenges are inevitable, but they are met with an unyielding commitment to our cause. The soul-enriching nature of this work lies in the lives touched, stories shared, and the hope rekindled.

Yay! It's Work in the Wild Wednesday! A special day (according to me) when I get to celebrate brands I've had the opportunity to work with over the years do their thing. This is a nonprofit direct mail piece from Houses of Hope that encourages readers to support them through Give to Lincoln Day. My favorite things about this direct mail piece that work are: 1) The first-class stamp got to me faster than using a nonprofit bulk stamp. 2) My first name and Tammy Stevenson's signature are handwritten. 3) There's a reply envelope inside :) 4) The short paragraphs and strategic bolding made it an easy read. 5) Words that speak directly to the reader like "you" and "your" are used. Houses of Hope provides expertise and guidance to help people find their own way to successfully manage their substance use and mental health during recovery. "A Problem shared is a problem halved" (Frost, 2021) Sharing problems isn't easy for children, but having a supportive person or mentor makes sharing difficult times more manageable. It helps alleviate anxiety and stress and helps them feel like they have a sense of community, supporting their mental and emotional well-being. Also, when mentors can listen with empathy, it validates a child's feelings, leaving them empowered. #BigBrothersBigSisters #BBBSNWO #mentorship #youthleadership #philanthropy #donate #volunteer #suicideawareness

Realizing that mental health issues can impact anyone of us - directly or indirectly- is a first step toward caring. A second step is taking action to help others. Supporting programs that provide hands on help to people and families struggling with the aftermath of something so traumatic as suicide is a great way to connect caring with action. #MentalHealthAwareness
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are proud to support Kimberli’s Place Foundation, Inc, a local organization here in Charlotte dedicated to bridging the gap in suicide prevention and mental health services.
