In an awe-inspiring feat, #PeakEvolution, a Swiss team backed by Gebrüder Weiss, conquered the towering Ojos del Salado in Chile, setting a groundbreaking record for the highest altitude reached by an EV. Their solar-powered marvel, a modified Aebi VT450 transporter, ascended to an astonishing 6,500 meters, defying the challenges of the world's highest volcano. Transported from #Switzerland to #Chile, this electric powerhouse relies on two 120 kW motors and a robust 90 kWh EcoVolta lithium-ion battery. Charged by a network of 20 solar panels, yielding 7.4 kWp, it showcases a remarkable 200 km range in just 5 hours. Patrik Koller, the CEO of Peak Evolution, expressed their triumph: "Despite extreme conditions, our specially developed vehicle drove higher than any other e-vehicle – let alone a solar-powered one. We've trained for this moment for four years; giving up was never an option." Rail is already the most climate-friendly means of transportation, but there is still a lot of potential. Only in Germany one in four trains still run on fossil fuels, due to a lack of overhead line infrastructure. Battery electrical multiple units, such as the Stadler FLIRT Akku, offer a clean and environmentally friendly hybrid solution to this problem. The demands on the reliability and quality of trains, which are in use almost around the clock for up to 30 years, place high demands on the battery system. Oslo is aiming for zero emissions by 2030. To support this transformation, the municipality of Oslo is electrifying all vessels in the port of Oslo. In 2019, system integrator SEAM collaborated with Danfoss to convert the three passenger ferries, ‘Nesoddbåtene’, to electric power. With 2.8 million commuters depending on the ferries each year, reliable performance and quick charging was crucial. Thanks to VACON® NXP Liquid Cooled drives, the team successfully retrofitted the ferries, which now operate on 100% battery power. With the three ferries, the port of Oslo now has 11 electrified vessels and has reduced CO2 emissions by 6,000 tons annually – marking a significant step in the green transition. Review of the 48-seat uBus: a new scientific publication on uST transport In the next issue of the specialized Russian magazine Innovative Transport, Anatoli Unitsky, the General Designer of UST Inc., and his co-authors published an article on uST transport as an efficient solution for passenger transportation and provided a detailed description of the improved uBus U4-220-T2. The authors note that the accelerated urbanization process, along with increased traffic congestion and population mobility, requires the emergence of new modes of transport. Norway has officially opened its first wireless charging road for electric vehicles in the city of Trondheim. This project is part of a pilot program that uses advanced technology developed by Electreon Wireless. The road has special copper coils installed underneath the surface. These coils can transmit electricity directly to electric vehicles that have compatible receivers installed. The main goal of this project is to make it easier and more efficient for people to use electric vehicles. By enabling wireless charging, drivers may no longer need to stop frequently to plug in their cars for a charge, making their journeys more convenient. Norway has been a leader in adopting electric vehicles and building the necessary infrastructure to support them. This new initiative fits into the country's larger efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions. The wireless charging road is expected to be especially beneficial for electric taxis and public transport systems. By reducing the downtime associated with charging, these vehicles can remain in service longer and improve their overall efficiency. The results will inform the Swedish Transport Administration's continued efforts towards fossil-free transportation.
