This is extremely important work from NIST. For decades, we have viewed wildfire evacuation in the context of needing to convince people to leave, and always assuming there will be enough time to notify everyone. But our recent major wildfire fatality disasters in 2017 (Wine Country), 2018 (Camp Fire), 2020 (western Oregon), and 2023 (Lahaina, HI) were all No-Notice Evacuations, where people weren't notified, had no time to plan their escape, and didn't know what to do. Any community at-risk of a fast-moving, wind-driven wildfire (particularly the type of downslope wind-driven fires that produced all four of these catastrophes) needs to plan for this type of event, however rare it may seem. Downslope wind-driven fires are increasing, and without a plan that identifies potential temporary refuge areas and communicates them to residents, we will continue to see more fatal wildfire disasters.

We're going to be doing this in BC, right? Open conversations and problem solving on issues related to wildfire resilience in BC, right? We're going to involve the very people who are most impacted by wildland fire management in BC, right!? Or has the momentum already started to fade as we retreat back into our old ways?

We rely far too much on models which are informed by sparse, historical datasets. Most climate models tell us the future will be nothing like the past in terms of flooding & flood risk. Technology has a much greater role to play in planning and forecasting. Both in terms of acquiring more data to build better models and better modelling tools to drive the right business decisions. Note today that Irish Govt. planning to provide €100k to businesses effected by flooding - great for those businesses, badly needed but how many more bills like that can be paid? Our reality has changed, so must we.

What have we learned from post-fire restoration projects? … Small private landowners often lack the funding, expertise, or time to undertake restoration work. To address these barriers, California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan called for the establishment of Emergency Forest Restoration Teams (EFRTs). "As of July 30, 2024, wildfires have scorched a staggering 751,327 acres across our state. This year's wildfire activity is 2,816% higher than last year, 29 times the amount of acreage burned. The numbers are a stark reminder: 95% of wildfires are caused by humans. Stay vigilant—follow fire safety guidelines, maintain defensible space, and report suspicious activities. Let's prevent fires from accidental sparks like dragging trailer chains or improper campfires. A rapid fire that erupted in Bidwell Park, about 85 miles north of Sacramento, California, on Wednesday has already spread over 45,000 acres, forcing residents to be evacuated. The fire is only 3% contained, according to the latest update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). California has had 2 winters of plentiful rain & snow that has encouraged vast amounts of vegetation to spring up, leaving plenty of fuel around to ignite during the driest time of the year. Dead, dried-out grasses & small shrubs are often the kindling needed to start large blazes. But according to CAL FIRE, the cause of the Park Fire is still under investigation. According to AirNow.gov across NORAM, the worst air quality right now is in central, western Saskatchewan where conditions are hazardous. Now heading back to California the state has been gripped by drought since the early 2000s & has been devastated by wildfires in recent years. And they've caused hundreds of deaths, destroyed thousands of homes & created economic losses. Also this has caused many utilities to cut electricity to residents when fire risks arise. The month of February brought us dry, warm weather relative to the month with minimal snow on the ground. This has led to starting March out very dry with no spring melt, which usually provides us with excess water. The result of all of this is that we are entering spring with the potential to see wildfires.
