All this talk of the Olympics has made us quite nostalgic, so today we're winding the clock back to the year 2000 and AMP's sponsorship of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, 2000 Paralympic Games and the Olympic Torch Relay. AMP helped bring Australians together through the 'Ignite the Dream Tour', where volunteers and even AMP customers toured around Australia bringing a sense of community and togetherness in the lead up to the games. We dug into our archives and found some of the special moments from the games, capturing a very exciting time for AMP and Australia. Good luck to all of our 2024 Australian Olympians! On this day in history 01/25/24. In 1924 the 1st Winter Olympic Games opened in Chamonix, France. The 1924 Winter Olympics, officially known as the I Olympic Winter Games were a winter multi-sport event which was held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Originally held in association with the 1924 Summer Olympics, the sports competitions were held at the foot of Mont Blanc in Chamonix, and Haute-Savoie, France between 25 January and 5 February 1924. The Games were organized by the French Olympic Committee, and were originally reckoned as the “International Winter Sports Week.” With the success of the event, it was retroactively designated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as “the first Olympic Winter Games”. Athletes from 16 nations competed in the first Winter Olympic Games. Germany was banned from competing in the games, and instead hosted a series of games called Deutsche Kampfspiele. Medals were awarded in 16 events contested in 5 sports (9 disciplines). Many sources do not list curling and the military patrol, or list them as demonstration events. However, no such designation was made in 1924. In February 2006, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled that curling was a full part of the Olympic program, and have included the medals awarded in the official count. Now you know. There's been alot of people talking about this years 2024 France Olympics with topics including Turkey's shooter - Yusuf Dikec, and Julien Alfred winning St Lucia their first ever Olympic gold! However, something that's seemingly gone under the radar was Australia's strong performance at the games. The AOC (Australian Olympic Committee) increased their total medals in 2020 - 46, to an increased number of 53 medals in 2024. What's more interesting about this medal increase, is the amount of sporting talent winning these medals who were also born in Australia. In the past a significant percentage of the Australian victorious Olympians were born outside of the country. At the 2024 Olympics however, only 32% of their medalists were born outside of Australia. Really impressive results from team Australia. 🌏

#snsinstitution #snsdesignthinking #snsdesignthinkers The modern Olympic Games (OG; or Olympics; French: Jeux olympiques, JO)[a][1] are the world's leading international sporting events. They feature summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition, with more than 200 teams, representing sovereign states and territories, participating. By default, the Games generally substitute for any world championships during the year in which they take place (however, each class usually maintains its own records).[2] The Olympic Games are held every four years. Since 1994, they have alternated between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years during the four-year Olympiad.[3][4] Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, which encompasses all entities and individuals involved in the Olympic Games. The Olympic Charter defines their structure and authority.

With India performing fantastically in the Paralympics, I began to wonder: why is the Paralympics so popular, but similar para-sports events in cricket, football, and others don't enjoy the same attention? Well, here’s what I figured out: 1. Same Venue Integration: The Paralympics is treated as an extension of the Olympics, starting in 1988 in Seoul, when it was held at the same venues. Sharing infrastructure is a major advantage. 2. Media Rights: Paralympic media rights are bundled with the Olympics, ensuring wide coverage. This visibility is a big reason for its popularity. 3. A bit of history: The Paralympics owes much of its success to Sir Ludwig Guttmann, whose vision was to integrate disabled athletes into mainstream sports. 4. Strategic Alignment: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ensured that the Paralympics was not seen as a separate or lesser event, but rather as a continuation of the same pursuit of sporting excellence. Kudos to them! 5. Paisa: Yes, it often comes down to finances. Governing bodies like FIFA and ICC focus more on revenue-generating events, leaving para-sports lower on the priority list. It’s time to change that. For context, India won the first and only official Physical Disability Cricket World Cup in 2019. It’s high time governing bodies invest more in para-sports, following the IOC's example.

Olympics vs. Paralympics: A Budgetary Reflection It's fascinating how outcomes often defy expectations: 🔔 Olympics: ₹500 crore budget Medals: 0 Gold, 1 Silver, 5 Bronze🥇🥈🥉 🔔 Paralympics: ₹20 crore budget Medals: 3 Gold, 5 Silver, 7 Bronze 🥇🥈🥉 When you compare the budgets and the results, it raises a compelling question: 🙋 Are we investing our resources where they truly make the most impact? Despite having only a fraction of the budget, our Paralympians brought home a much richer haul of medals. 1️⃣ What does this say about grit, determination, and the power of belief? ⏩ I'd love to hear your thoughts on this 2️⃣ Should we rethink our priorities and how we allocate resources in sports? 3️⃣ What lessons can we learn from these athletes who achieved so much with so little? #Olympics #Paralympics #Sports #BudgetVsOutcome #Inspiration Follow Tapesh Kumar

With the Paralympics drawing to a close, it's fascinating to note the contrasting success of top-performing nations. In the Olympics, USA & China led the medal charts (126/91) while Team GB secured an honorable 65 medals. In the ongoing Paralympics, China & Team GB are on track for a similar medal haul as the Olympics (87/54). However, the USA's current medal count is 42, just a third of their Olympic total. This raises questions about their focus and efforts in the Paralympics as a nation. At Anglia Research, we understand the importance of allocating efforts across all areas. We prioritize equal care and consideration in our work, avoiding a singular focus on flagship cases and revenue streams. #Paralympics #TeamGB #AngliaResearch
