At the tail end of 2022, when the majority of fund managers feared a continuation of the global bear market, our top-down investment approach followed the data, not the herd. Subsequently, our flagship global equity strategy, Alpha, was correctly positioned for the rebound in equity markets in Q1 2023 and throughout. A year later, our Lead Portfolio Managers Mathias Bottern and Farah Hertog, recently sat down to film our first ever investment focused video update. In its 2024 outlook, BlackRock presented an interesting hypothesis: "What if you were able to accurately predict U.S. equity sector returns with perfect foresight?" As it turns out, rebalancing once or twice has yielded a much higher return in the new regime, which started in 2020, than the old regime. This experiment highlights the potential for an active approach to add value in the new regime, compared with a buy-and-hold strategy.
