Spoiler alert: $10k signing bonuses for select Laboratory roles at Island Health!! Something I learned since starting with Island Health is that there's a critical shortage of Medical Laboratory professionals across Canada. Beyond that, this shortage leads to cascading effects negatively impacting patients everywhere. This can lead to the more inconvenient effect of increased wait times, but also leads to more severe effects in terms of negative patient outcomes, and increased suffering due to unknown causes. When labs don't have the staff to stay open, they have to shut down services. Specimens from areas without coverage have to be transported to other areas, creating backlogs. Emergency rooms can shut down, mystery illnesses go undiagnosed, more populated areas go through longer wait times to deal with the added capacity, while rural or remote areas may not have the ability to help patients for days. All this to say.. to help address shortages here on the island, we're offering signing bonuses for new Medical Lab Technologists, and Combined Lab / Xray Technologists for permanent fulltime, and part time positions (over .6 FTE)! If you or someone you know could be interested in bringing their skills to the island, here's a list of our eligible positions! https://lnkd.in/gvZi9fmx

#TheHeartofBarwonHealth 𝐃𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐦 𝐍𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐡, 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧 "I am an emergency medicine physician and have worked here as a consultant for about six years. I graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2006, and after spending about five years in the local health service. We then moved to Melbourne where I commenced my ED training at The Alfred. I joined Barwon Health in 2016 as a registrar. The lifestyle opportunities and excellent specialist exam training are what drew me here. The support and camaraderie in the emergency department, as well as the dynamic leadership group, are what keep me here. It’s certainly a challenging role, but it offers numerous growth opportunities. One of the biggest challenges we face is adapting to the evolving landscape of healthcare. Populations are growing and there’s increasing demand. However, it’s not just about treatment and management; it’s about being a companion on a patient’s journey. That companionship validates our work and makes patients feel heard. Improving access and reducing anxiety and negative patient experiences in neurodiverse patients is a project that I'm passionate about. Many neurodiverse individuals face significant challenges when visiting the emergency department, including heightened anxiety and sensory overload. These experiences can make an already stressful situation even more daunting. My goal is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment in the emergency department, where neurodiverse patients feel understood and cared for. By implementing tailored strategies and training for staff, we can better address the unique needs of these patients, ultimately leading to more positive healthcare experiences and outcomes for them."

Check out this spotlight on one of our Co-op Pharmacy Managers!
In remote communities in Western Canada, accessing healthcare professionals can be a challenge. This is where the role of a pharmacist can help significantly. Riz Gumpac is a Pharmacy Manager at Ucluelet Co-op in Ucluelet, B.C. Riz and his team know just how important their services are to the community. “We are very strained in our health care resources. We can’t replace doctors, but when doctors are not available, we become a resource for people to talk to. The clinic in our area is only open two days a week, so people come see us first and seek advice on how they manage until they can see the doctor.” Riz’s value to the community has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, Riz received the B.C. Pharmacy Association’s New Practitioner Award for being a champion of health services in the community. We are grateful for pharmacists like Riz, who support their Co-ops and provide critical services in communities across Western Canada. I never imagined that a simple change in perspective could have such a huge impact on my career. Being a pharmacist in Western Sydney, I can attest to the hustle and bustle of a busy pharmacy. That is why I find it SO important that we are constantly keeping ourselves in check, reinforcing what our goals are as not JUST pharmacists but as pillars of the community. Time and again, I have seen many of us out there, become disillusioned and bitter due to time and workload constraints… I get it, work can be stressful, lots of decisions to make and lots of things on the line… However, we cannot let it impact the way we deliver primary healthcare to our community… I have elderly patients that come by on a daily basis not to buy anything, they just want to have a chat.. It might be the only genuine social interaction that they may have on that day! So today when you clock into work, forget about the prescriptions, forget about business “KPIs” and “targets” (just for a moment 🤣) and remember what pharmacy is! Pharmacy is the fusion of 3 elements: 1) Healthcare, 2) Community and 3) Support It’s time to remind ourselves of our impact on all these aspects and to make the most of all of our patient interactions today, I assure you, you won’t regret it! -------------------------------------------------------------- If you like this post and want more Pharmacy related info, then join the community today! Pharmacist Ghassoub El Assaad calls out #loneliness in patients. “ I have elderly patients that come by on a daily basis not to buy anything, they just want to have a chat.. So today when you clock into work, forget about the prescriptions, forget about business “KPIs” and “targets” (just for a moment 🤣) and remember what pharmacy is!” There is a growing movement of #pharmacists recognising the importance of addressing loneliness. Let’s learn more about loneliness so we can speak about it confidently, help reduce the stigma associated with loneliness and move toward helping address (and prevent) loneliness in our patients. #watchthisspace Reach out to pharmacist and founder Jenny Kirschner if you would like to share what you are doing in your role as a pharmacist to address loneliness.
