Mr. Andrew Leroy Rudder is very honoured to be participating as a speaker in the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers’ (CABL) Annual Conference: “A Moment in Time: The Evolution of the Legal Landscape”, at the Ontario Bar Association in Toronto, on October 12 and 13, which is a couple days after his speaking engagement at Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology's ClioCon 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 9 and 10! Thank you to Tracey-Ann Dobson-Hamilton-Ann Dobson — the Director of Professional Development of CABL, and the wonderful, hard-working team of CABL’s Professional Development Committee.      Mr. Rudder will be participating in the session entitled: “Civil Practice: Mastering the Art before the Court and Tribunal”, alongside his fellow, brilliant panelists, Monique Jilesen and Melissa Burkett. While I am not one for accolades and awards (I’d rather just get the win/accomplish the goal and enjoy the process along the way), thank you to those that nominated and supported me to be recognized as a Rising Star in this year’s Super Lawyers List. You are too kind and thoughtful, and I appreciate your words and actions. this includes you Ken Nim. I am looking forward to continuing to build and help others accomplish their goals. 2. I spend a lot of time reflecting on the legal industry and its role in business and with people. Whether you are a solo practitioner, boutique law firm, medium sized law firm, big law, or in-house, we all can contribute in meaningful, different ways to businesses and the people who help them. Accordingly, I ask you: what are some of the top traits that you like in an attorney? Conversely, what are some of the top traits that you dislike in an attorney? Happy Fourth!!!

One of the reasons I decided to come back to Hall & Evans recently is that the attorneys here know how to try cases and aren't afraid of the courtroom. I've tried more than fifty cases to juries and it's important to me to work with other attorneys who not only understand courtroom litigation, but actually have the experience doing it. One of the skills you can only develop through actual trial work is picking and advocating to a jury. For the litigators out there, please consider coming to the CBA Litigators' Summit this Thursday where I'll be presenting about the impact of diversity on jury deliberations and how to create diverse juries. Research shows diverse juries have wider ranging deliberations and reach verdicts that are better across almost all metrics. Plus diversity protects against deliberations tainted by bias and ignorance. And because those still impact trials shockingly often, I'll be discussing steps trial lawyers can take to ask for a new trial when verdicts are based on animus and harmful stereotypes, rather than actual evidence. As attorneys on the front lines of often high profile trials, it serves the interests of our clients and our communities to pick juries who will reach fair and unbiased verdicts and increase confidence in the court system.

As an organization dedicated to mentoring law students of color and encouraging them to enter the appellate world, we understand how disheartening recent Supreme Court decisions and lower court challenges can be. One of our TAP mentors, Antonio L. Ingram II, Esq., Assistant Counsel for NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., shares where he draws hope: "In these challenging times, we draw hope from the Black National Anthem: 'God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.' Yes, setbacks abound, and abject injustice seems ubiquitous. Yet, our testimony isn’t over. If we persist, we will behold the goodness of God." We believe in the power of perseverance and the strength of our collective resolve. We have faced immense challenges before and emerged stronger. Our journey is far from over, and our fight for justice continues. To our mentees and all aspiring lawyers of color: let us stand together, support one another, and keep pushing forward. #Justice comes in many forms - recognizing the past, hearing from others, and taking steps to move forward are huge steps. This reminds me of important conversations I had recently with Dr Nayr Ibrahim about #Apartheid in South Africa and Tove Mentsen Ness at the recent conference about #Sami and #Indigenous people Nord University. The crisis in Israel and Gaza is a complicated issue. There is so little we can directly control. But I think we should all agree that there is no room for hate speech in general and anti semitic conduct anywhere, and such conduct should be actively denounced and dealt with by the institutions charged with educating the next generations of lawyers.
