A delegation from the U.S. came to Horten in Norway for a comprehensive week-long demonstration of Kongsberg Discovery's HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), showcasing the company’s proven technology developed over the last 30 years. 🌊 Kongsberg produces three models that fall into the Large Diameter Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (LDUUV) category as defined by US Navy — the newest and most capable of which is HUGIN Endurance.  ⚓️ While the new AUV incorporates many of the industry-leading capabilities found in previous HUGIN vehicles, to enable long-term unsupported missions new advancements had to be made. These include greater redundancy, a new autonomous mission management system, greater situational awareness, and the ability to deal with a wide range of varying water density. 🛟 In addition to Kongsberg’s standard compliment of mapping sensors, this vehicle includes a large configurable volume that can be used to carry a mixture of batteries and custom payloads as needed. The system is designed to allow autonomous operations directly from shore, and with a full complement of batteries, it can spend up to 15 days at sea, traveling up to 2200 km (1200 nautical miles). 🔗 Find out more >> https://hubs.la/Q02zqkXF0 “Our HUGIN AUVs were always designed for dual use purposes. This is an amazing feat of engineering and innovation. But one sticking point, the Los Angeles Class of submarine as much as it is respected and feared by adversaries, is a 30 year old design, and the cost of such retrofitting and the knock on effects of this retrofit and the collision with any pre planned obsolescence engineering schedule must be phenomenal. As a one off test I can see every merit in this. On a long list of lessons learned would it perhaps been more productive to have adopted this capability into the Virginia Class? I believe above and beyond this amazing advance and scope by L3Harris Technologies, that as a NATO and AUKUS partner the U.K. has an amazing opportunity to take a significant leap forward with possible incorporation of this type of capability with the new Dreadnought Class ? I believe that Babcock International Group , BAE Systems in a collaboration pact could yield a very significant advantage not only to re-shape Dreadnought capabilities with the Submarine Delivery Agency, to incorporate a truly ubiquitous defence capability. Such as a compelling conventional electronic and autonomous asset based swarm sub deterrent package, as well as that of the intended Nuclear. While Dreadnought is still at a steel cut , greater innovation including managing autonomous submarine and surface UAV assets likely needs to be incorporated as a modular capability suite that can be applied rapidly.
