Private equity is increasingly buying up private US hospitals. PE firms own 8% of all US private hospitals as of January 2024, researchers from the nonprofit Private Equity Stakeholder Project found. Some experts, including lawmakers, are concerned about the rising trend of PE firms scooping up hospitals. They argue the business model is incompatible with delivering quality care, as PE firms typically seek high profits over a short time period. “We have seen PE firms aggressively loot safety-net hospitals, strip out valuable real estate, cut critical but less profitable services, and exploit government funding programs designed to support and stabilize healthcare access,” PESP researchers wrote in a report. On April 7, we recognized World Health Day. The irony of the theme My Health. My Right is suitable for the current healthcare crisis in Peterborough and all of Ontario. Canada once provided high-quality universal healthcare to all residents. This statement may be contentious as we continue to provide free healthcare but in today’s climate, we need to ask ourselves if it is genuinely “universal”.  We continue to witness more Ontarians losing access to the grassroots of healthcare: primary care. This is the front door to the entire health system, delivered by family physicians or nurse practitioners who provide a continuum of care to their patients. We need to consider if those who are “unattached” (or orphaned) from a family physician or nurse practitioner have the opportunity to experience the same comprehensive care that those connected to a primary care provider have. This is a reminder to our leaders at the system level that My Health. My Right means all Ontarians and Canadians deserve the right to have access to our universal healthcare system. This will only happen when further investments are made in existing primary healthcare models and to the dedicated healthcare providers who have committed themselves to the foundation of the health system and the patients who need them. #WorldHealthDay #PrimaryHealthCare

New analysis from the Health Foundations REAL Centre projects that health care funding in England will need to rise by 3.8% per year in real terms, over the next 10 years, to meet rising care needs and deliver significant improvements in the NHS. This includes higher annual growth of 4.5% in the first 5 years. Based on current spending assumptions, this would add up to an extra £46bn of funding by the end of the parliament, leaving a funding gap of £38bn per year. While these figures may vary or indeed be more accommodating as we move forward, it still highlights a large funding gap. At least if the NHS by and large remains as is. #HealthFoundation #NHS #BD

When private equity firms buy a health care company, communities often pay the price.     A Senate committee is investigating whether private equity’s takeover of a large share of emergency rooms has hurt patients. Over 40 emergency department physicians interviewed by committee staff expressed “significant concerns” about patient safety and care resulting from aggressive practices by private equity firms.     Private equity firms often slash costs to make a profit, from reducing staff to cutting critical services, at the expense of communities’ wellbeing.    “The emergency department is the canary in the coal mine for the whole U.S. health care system. We are the first to see the breaking point and we are beyond that,” explains Mitchell Li, MD, an emergency physician and founder of Take Medicine Back.
