Reflect > Remembering! 💯 One of the best athletes I ever had the privileges of playing with used to tell me this... (will remain nameless but been in the National Hockey League (NHL) for a decade) 🏒 Sounds simple.. but what did he really mean? After every shift, game, tournament, etc... He would reflect back on things he did well / could improve on so he could make the immediate adjustments. Once that process is complete... What is the value in continuing to harp on the past? In other words... Take your learnings - improve - and move on. Sales is quite similar... You're going to fail A LOT! But the trick is to reflect on the previous cold call, email, opp, etc... I hear a lot of people telling me that sales is a numbers game. Well, for many industries perhaps that is the case. However, for my industry, particularly if you are hunting for your first COT or TOT... you CANNOT use the numbers game strategy. Now, apart from his obvious talent, does Messi get his success in soccer through a numbers game or skills? I am sure Messi didn't just kick a ball thousands of times daily and magically become the best player, did he? No way. He dedicates himself to refining his skills and techniques every single day. That's the reason why he's raking in millions playing soccer! Unfortunately, many salespeople mistakenly believe they can just play the numbers game and skyrocket to success. But let's get real here. Sales, just like soccer, is all about honing your skills, not merely relying on numbers. Likewise, if you genuinely want to ramp up your sales game and start hitting your COT or TOT, it's about mastering those essential skills. So, take a page from Messi's playbook. Getting pucks deep/pucks on net. In hockey you need two things to score a goal(most of the time). You need to be in the offensive zone and you need to shoot the puck at the net. In sales, you have the same two requirements. You need to get in front of your prospect and you need to speak with them. Getting pucks in deep is the same principle of engaging prospects through email/linkedin. Everything you can do to get in front of the prospect and build familiarity is the equivalent of getting into the offensive zone. With that being said, you can spend the whole game in the offensive zone, but if you don’t shoot the puck, you won’t score. The same applies for dialling. Your prospects may be reading all of your emails and seeing your activity on LinkedIn, but rarely do they proactively reach out. Pick up the phone and dial = shooting the puck. You certainly want to prioritize high opportunity chances by being well researched and relevant. But sometimes you simply need to throw the puck on the net, and hope for a lucky bounce. Pucks in deep + pucks on net = scoring goals Emails and LinkedIn + dialling = meetings booked.

Why sales isn’t just a numbers game? 🏀 Let’s look at Steph Curry, for example, a 3-point champion. Imagine if Steph said, “Oh, basketball is just a numbers game, just shoot as many threes as you can and eventually you will hit one.” He would never have made it to the NBA with that mindset. But now he knows, it is a skills game. So, every day he is focused on his technique, he is focused on his wrist movements, his hand movements, how he is dribbling. He is focused on his technique every day to get better at the skill and because of that he gets paid millions of dollars. Sports/Sales post alert! Keep scrolling if you don’t like those 2 topics. Basketball- playing extremely hard and putting your best effort in on defense is not going to stop a great player. It’ll just get you tired and frustrated when it’s not working. Figuring out what your opponent does best and then making them uncomfortable doing it, is the best type of defense you can play. Example: your opponent loves shooting 3s but can’t drive to the basket, your probably gonna want to play up and give them the lane. This doesn’t take max effort to achieve it takes understanding the game and executing. Same thing when it comes to sales. If you find the pain point of your buyer, and then figure out the best way to “attack” it, chances are your gonna be able to attain your goal.
