Nonprofits are the backbone of our communities, but many are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods due to rising rent and limited space. Prior to the pandemic, TNN’s membership identified access to space as a “founding and forever” issue. The pandemic magnified the challenges associated with accessing and developing space for Toronto’s nonprofits. Torontonians deserve to live within walking distance of nonprofits that deliver services which bring people together and make Toronto dynamic, healthy and vibrant. Yet, nonprofit organizations are being forced out of their neighbourhoods or closing at an alarming rate due to commercial landlords raising rents. Despite being critical community builders, small nonprofits are the most vulnerable to being pushed out. Nonprofits in Toronto need access to secure and affordable space now. The Holyhead Walk Of Fame? As we look at ways to #regenerate our high streets and town centres, we should also be ready to celebrate our collective successes. And we think this would do just that, while contributing to the rejuvenation. We think that what every town needs is a small strip of public space to celebrate anyone in the town who’s done something good for it. A Walk of Fame. For anyone opening a shop, not closing shop. For staffing and supporting the food bank. Keeping the church, library, youth centre, drop-in centre, day care going? Also in. Selflessly keeping the planters planted, lobbying the local authority for funding? Included. Raising money with bake-sales, jumble-sales, sponsored walks, sponsored runs? Thanked. Buying the local paper. Buying locally made products. Shopping for local services. Celebrated. Doing anything they can to help the place not just survive, but hopefully to thrive. Recognised for it. Every town: from Hollywood, Worcestershire and Hollins Green, Cheshire to Hollinfare, Lancashire. A walk of fame for people who can be bothered. Who DO make a positive difference. Not that people need recognition for altruism, or feel that it's warranted. But the way to saving town centres isn’t just in looking to rescue buildings and real estate. It’s about #restoring #communities. And how we recognise that we can all make the difference. So let’s #celebrate that by giving the difference-makers pride of place. This helps these organizations offset their operational costs and support the individuals and families they serve, moving them from poverty to sustainability and prosperity. We have secured thousands of top-brand shoes and are partnering with The Village99, a nonprofit member that recognizes the challenges athletes face with fees, equipment, and travel costs. Village99 has evolved to support the broader needs of these athletes' families, many of whom have unmet needs. By being THE Source for product procurement, we enable our member nonprofits and schools to focus on fulfilling their missions and scaling their impact. Our products cost less than 10% of retail prices, often averaging below 5%, allowing these organizations to extend their missions exponentially and stretch their dollars further. Imagine a Toronto without nonprofits. A Toronto where there is no social housing, no children’s services, no employment services, no arts and cultural programming. A Toronto where there is no one to identify and respond to emerging community issues and to ensure that local voices are heard by decision-makers. This is the scenario that we are facing if we don’t act now to protect the space rights of nonprofits. Nonprofits are vital for Toronto’s communities, but they are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods by rising rents and lack of space.
