🚺 Empowering Women in Industry Specific to Women in Mining (WiM) Hello Everyone, Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and prosperous New Year 2024! In the topic of women empowerment in Mining, the role of women in the mining industry has come a long way, but there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality in the sector. The participation of women in the mining industry is not only a matter of gender equality but also a strategic imperative for creating a more sustainable, innovative, and socially responsible sector. Companies that embrace diversity and actively encourage the inclusion of women are likely to benefit from a more resilient and forward-thinking workforce. With continued research, collaboration, and commitment to change, the mining industry can achieve true gender equality and create a brighter future for all. “Within the intricate tapestry of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) communities, gender equality is crucial for sustainable development. Yet, women endure systemic marginalisation and discrimination, hindering their full participation within these communities.” In our latest Alchemist, Kady Seguin and Jeannette Akinyi (IMPACT) examine the challenges that women in the industry face, such as lower wages, limited access to higher-paying positions, and unrealised potential. Kady and Jeannette also detail the importance of equality in these industries and the good work achieved by the Network for the Empowerment of Women in Mining Communities (REAFECOM) in bringing women to the forefront. The introduction of the ZiG based on the gold reserves, intrigued me to findout what is actually happening in gold artisanal mining sector. I can clearly say women still have a long way to benefit in gold mining. The turf is male dominated and not an easy one. Women are found in the peripheral section, panning the residue left for least benefit. A lot has to be done for women to be able to benefit from gold mining and Inspired Inclusion has to be intensional in order to see participation of women increase. The road is not easy and yes, being on the ground makes you aware of how far women are in being equal players, realising gender equality and inclusion in certain sectors of the economy

#GenderEquality in #MiningAndResources is lagging behind. Shockingly, no mining or resources companies made the cut for the WGEA Reporting Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation holders list released today. With 115 companies recognised across all industries, this is a glaring gap. It's time for the mining and resources sector to step up and commit to creating inclusive workplaces for women.
