Have you heard the word ”scenius" and why it’s going to the death of the lone genious myth?
It’s quickly become my new favorite word. Why? Because it challenges the myth of the lone genius—a myth that’s often centered around white men. Think of Mozart, Einstein, Steve Jobs, Tarantino, and Musk. You know their names. You’ve probably heard the myth being passed down by other white men.
Like me. Or Brian Eno, who’s been labeled a genius more times than he cares to remember.
But Eno doesn’t believe in the idea of the lone genius. In fact, he coined a new word to flip that notion on its head. You guessed it: scenius
What I love most about the idea of scenius is how it exposes the flaws in the genius myth and addresses several issues it perpetuates:
- It distorts how we understand creativity and innovation.
- It places too much power and glory in the hands of a few, while those who also contributed are left in the shadows.
- It promotes the false belief that some people are inherently special, while others can never reach the same level.
- It undermines the confidence of those who don’t see themselves as "naturally" gifted.
- It reinforces inequality by only elevating certain individuals, giving them the biggest opportunities, power, and resources.
And ultimately, it leads society to rely too heavily on charismatic (read: loud and fame-seeking) individuals for solutions, rather than investing in collective, long-term efforts.
What Brian Eno points out is that real innovation comes from a scene—a network of people who challenge, support, compete, and collaborate with each other.
Here’s a little snippet of his thinking, so you don’t have to just take my word for it: https://lnkd.in/dhj7F7EN
