Bonner Wissenschaftsnacht 2024 - we will be there! 🎉 📣 Under the motto "Freigeist", research institutions and universities from the #wissenschaftsregionbonn will present current research projects in exciting hands-on stations, exhibits and lectures on May 16 & 17, 2024. The 3R-Competence Network NRW can be found on Münsterplatz in Tent 12. ⚖ The 3R principle is at the center of our network. In line with the motto of this year's #BonnerWissenschaftsnacht, the 3R principle reconciles scientific freedom and animal welfare! Biomedical research decodes structures and processes in the human organism. This makes it possible to understand diseases and develop new therapies. However, animal experiments are also part of the research process. 🐭 🔬 💡 ▶ But why do animal experiments still exist? ▶ What about animal welfare? ▶ What is the 3Rs principle? ▶ And are there replacement and alternative methods for animal testing? These and many other questions will be explored by the 3R Competence Network NRW in our tent at the #BonnerWissenschaftsnacht. You can test your knowledge on the subject of animal testing in an interactive quiz. We will also use illustrative objects to demonstrate how animal experiments are replaced, reduced or improved in biomedical research in line with the 3Rs principle. 💡 🔎 #BoWiNa2024 #BonnerWissenschaftsnacht #sciencenight #3rnrw #scienceregionbonn #biomedicalrearch #nrw #bonn #3R #3Rprinciple #Wisskomm #animalwelfare #communication #research #curious

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the UK's Concordat on Openness on Animal Research. We now have 127 signatories across the life sciences sector who are committed to being transparent with the public about when, how, and why they use animals in research. CEO of Understanding Animal Research Oceania, Bella Lear explains prior secrecy surrounding how animals were used in research contributed to public distrust and decreasing acceptance of animal research. The Concordat was designed to help address that. “[Institutions] weren’t talking to the press, weren’t publicly admitting that they used animals in research, weren’t really talking to anybody,” Lear explains. "There needed to be a journey that involved the public, governments and scientists creating a future together.” According to Lear, the impacts of the Concordat can certainly be seen in the sheer volume of information about animal research now available to the public that was kept private just ten years ago. “It’s amazing to me how far we’ve come," Lear shares. "For ages, people had filing cabinets full of all this stuff that they would never put online in case somebody found it. It’s incredible to me now that they’re not worried about that.” Read the full story here to find out more: https://ow.ly/yroW50QZwSK. #AnimalResearch

From the Research Posters to the Global Stage: Plantae Labs at IPPE 2024 in Atlanta 🌍🌱 As the echoes of IPPE 2024 still linger in our minds, we're propelled by the thought-provoking exchanges and the shared enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture that we experienced in Atlanta. Our presence may not have been marked by a booth, but our research poster stood as a beacon of innovation, drawing in a multitude of inquisitive minds. 📸 Take a glimpse into our journey: Sebastian Decap, our insightful Animal Health and Nutrition Manager, engaging with peers over the future of animal health. Rosa Navarro Lisboa, our adept R&D Manager, alongside our study that’s pioneering new paths in plant-based solutions. Victoria Tapia, R&D Specialist, representing the vigor and vision of forward-thinking agro-science. Hans Konsens, our steadfast Managing Director, guiding Plantae Labs towards new horizons of innovation. Our study on botanical solutions for turkey poults not only highlights a stride in animal health but also represents a step towards the sustainable practices that our planet direly needs. We're thankful to every attendee who stopped by to discuss, debate, and dream with us about the possibilities. Your insights and curiosity fuel our mission. Dear UK Government, First of all, congratulations! We know you have some big plans for the UK and there are a few things the team at FRAME would especially love to see. 1) Details of the roadmap to phase out animal testing pledged in your manifesto. We also want this phase-out plan extended to animal research, such as basic and applied research, where most animals are used. 2) Honouring the previous Government’s February 2024 commitments to increase funding into non-animal research, restarting the public attitudes to animal research survey, and publishing a plan to ‘accelerate the development and uptake of methods to reduce reliance on animals used in science’. 3) Create and commit to a cross-departmental science strategy focused on the replacement of animals. 4) Strengthen existing legislation to ensure opportunities to avoid animal use in science are being more thoroughly explored and utilised. 5) Commit to increasing transparency and openness around animal research so that information is available to guide future developments in non-animal research, and make it clearer where current roadblocks are. And, of course, we’re here to help. We’ve spent over 50 years working towards a future where no animal suffers for science, and we’re not slowing down now. This is an opportunity for the UK Government to truly commit to a better future for animals and humans. #UKPolitics #NewGovernment #GeneralElection #AnimalWelfare #NAMs #NATs

Vision to replace animal testing 🐭🔬 We still face barriers in testing and research when it comes to moving away from animal testing. Continuing our series of interviews with FRAME Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments's CEO Celean Camp and cellQART®'s CEO Dennis Benkmann, Celean provides insights into testing regulations in different sectors. In testing, regulatory guidelines and official recommendations for animal use remain in place, requiring extensive data provision. Although there are changes, such as the UK government's reformed guidelines, more work and regulation is needed. In research, barriers include incentive to change in the academic sector, funding and publications as references to moving from in vivo to in vitro. Animal research still remains culturally ingrained in certain fields, hindering progress. There's still a long way to go, but we're working tirelessly towards an animal-free future, one step at a time. Stay tuned for the final part of our interview series next week, where we'll talk about how to accelerate this transition! 💡 #nonanimaltesting #biomedical #research #humanandhumane

Did you hear the news? Our work with the Coalition to Illuminate and Address Animal Methods Bias has been recognised with a prestigious #LushPrize! In a recent survey, 1/3 of respondents said that they'd been asked by reviewers to conduct animal research that was not part of their original project in order to get published. Here's the catch-22: - Reviewers often lack experience with non-animal methods. - They request familiar animal tests to "validate" the research. - Since less non-animal research gets published, it remains unfamiliar. - This cycle keeps animal testing the norm. COLAAB is here to break the cycle. We're a global team challenging unconscious bias in research and promoting more ethical alternatives. Removing bias leads to better science for everyone – it's a better future for animals and humans! We especially want to celebrate Catharine E. Krebs, Emily Trunnell, Ignacio Tripodi, and Helder Constantino for their tireless dedication!

The public may be broadly aware that animals are used for scientific and medical research. But how many are aware that more than a million mice and other laboratory animals are bred for science in Australia, but never used. The vast majority are humanely killed. Transparent statistics and increased scrutiny of the issue of surplus animals led to a 31% decrease in Germany - or around 700,000 fewer animals being bred, not used and killed in one year. Experts say reducing surplus animals is the easiest way to reduce the overall animals in research. Read my latest article - #animalresearch #science #animalwelfare

The breeding of surplus animals for research is a neglected issue which is hard to fully comprehend given not all Australian states and territories report these numbers. Read more in this article. https://lnkd.in/gWt_dxxR
