Recognition matters because representation matters! Full disclosure: I worked on this program for nearly two years. I understand its integrity and know from experience that winners often go on to do even more amazing things (I.e., inclusive leaders pay it forward!). Out & Equal’s Outie Awards recognize inclusive leaders and strategic initiatives that are making positive changes in their workplaces (and beyond!) for LGBTQIA+ talent, and others! There are so many champions out there doing great work! Often quietly and without much support. Here are some of the ways you can help the 7.6% of the U.S. population who identify as LGBTQ+ to feel safe being their full self at work: 1. It’s not enough to have LGBTQ+ representation in leadership — leaders should talk openly about their LGBTQ+ experience. 2. Audit the onboarding experience — what messages are you sending? 3. Move beyond awareness with employee resource groups. 4. Ensure every employee has an inclusive leader. 5. Make sure to talk about LGBTQ+ issues beyond Pride Month. In #publicsafety , everyone is #family You spend more holidays with your co-workers than you do with your own family. Of course, you have that weird aunt or grumpy uncle but at the end of the day - regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, sexuality, etc. Everyone loves eachother and supports eachother through those difficult calls. How do we make our workplaces genuinely inclusive and respectful? Here are five steps you can take to support the LGBTQ+ community every day: 1️⃣ Pride all year long: Don’t limit your support to social media posts and activities during June. Show your allyship for the LGBTQ+ community consistently throughout the year. Authenticity is key. 2️⃣ Separate identity from ability: A person's sexuality doesn’t determine their skills or work performance. Recognise people for their talents and contributions. 3️⃣ Inclusive leadership: Ensure that LGBTQ+ voices are represented in your leadership team. Their insights are crucial for developing fair and inclusive policies. 4️⃣ Learn and listen: Regular training sessions and workshops on LGBTQ+ inclusivity are essential. Hearing personal experiences fosters empathy and understanding. 5️⃣ Buddy system: Implement a buddy system so everyone has someone to talk to confidentially.
