February is LGBT+ History Month and this year's theme celebrates the LGBT+ community's contributions to the field of #Medicine. 🌈🔬 Arguably one of the community's biggest impacts was in the development of modern #PatientAdvocacy, a topic we discussed with Neil Bertelsen as he relayed the story of how HIV patients shaped a whole new approach to patient/regulator engagement. "What happened in those last years of the 1980s was something that we hadn’t seen before: a genuine coming together of both the medical community and the patient community, where we became hand-in-glove, basically learning at the same speed." We stand on the shoulders of these giants 🙏 Learn more about how HIV patients became the architects of modern patient advocacy here 👇https://hubs.li/Q02jtNd-0 #LGBTPlusHistory #UnderTheScope

This has serious implications for both domestic and foreign policies and programs for our communities and beyond. Building on the experience of the HIV movement in fighting these same far-right forces, this webinar will discuss potential responses through the lens of HIV affected communities and programs. Director of Public Policy & Advocacy | Coalition Builder & Community-Centered Leader | Equity & Health Policy Strategist & Author
Looking forward to participating in this conversation. Project 2025 is something we should all be paying attention to. It is not just a political agenda; it is a potential catalyst for deepening health inequities that have been decades in the making. Recognizing that this is just the latest in decades-long attempts to redraw political and health landscapes in this nation is pivotal. In the 70s, after the success of the Civil Rights movement, we saw the radical response of the far-right, with the Southern Strategy. Its utilization of racial tensions to reshape electoral politics and stratify healthcare services lead to detrimental health outcomes for minority and underserved populations. In the 80s, we saw the implementation of Reaganomics and its cuts to social services, leading to reduced access to healthcare, disproportionately affecting communities of color. Join us in this dynamic discussion in July.

Our recent short report in Sexual Health (with my lovely co-authors Drs. Mance Buttram and Matthew S. Ellis, PhD, MPE) found that individuals living in states with lower LGBTQ equality in the US were significantly less likely to be aware of #doxyPEP – an important evidence-based biomedical strategy that is effective at preventing bacterial STIs, particularly syphilis and chlamydia, among gay and bisexual men and trans women. (Full article: https://lnkd.in/g5GZuW8Z) Inequities find a way creeping in when there are exciting new advances afoot. An understanding of how social determinants of health structure the implementation of interventions is crucial. This has been clearly seen with HIV PrEP. We need more research focused on how social determinants of health impact the uptake of novel biomedical advances, with a distinct focus on equity and communities who are disproportionately impacted. Let's work to ensure that everyone who can benefit from #doxyPEP knows that it exists, how it works and has access to it. Incidentally, I'm also saddened that my final factsheet for aidsmap is on the topic of #doxyPEP (https://lnkd.in/gfWPt58y).

Comment below with health equity facts, figures, impacts around Queer Health that startle, impress, or worry you. Example: For no discernible reason, HIV prep meds aren’t given a separate ndc from treatment meds; causing unnecessary administrative burden on payers, providers, and patients - and can cause confusion in insurance payments and unnecessary patient out of pocket expense. #healthequity #pride #lgbtq #healthdisparities

Grindr accused of selling users' data on their HIV status 🛑 The world's biggest dating app for the LGBT community is allegedly sharing users' highly sensitive information for commercial purposes, including the date of their latest HIV test and HIV status. In 2021, Grindr was already fined €5,800,000 by Norwegian authorities for breaking #GDPR as it shared users' data without their consent with third-party companies for advertising purposes. 👉 How long before we realize that these tech giants have no regard for our #intimacy? Kudos to Chaya Hanoomanjee from Austen Hays for leading this strategic litigation, which may shed new light onto exploitative practices of dating apps and improve standards for the whole #sextech sector. #digitalrights #techlaw #dataprotection #LGBT

Did you know that discrimination hinders access to HIV care for millions worldwide? This Zero Discrimination Day, let's commit to breaking down these barriers and ensuring everyone has the right to health. Discrimination against marginalized communities, including women, girls, and LGBTQ+ individuals, remains a significant obstacle to achieving health equity. These harmful practices violate fundamental rights and impede access to essential HIV services. This year, let's take action: Uphold the rights of all individuals. Advocate for the removal of discriminatory laws and policies. Stand with marginalized communities in their fight for equality. Support organizations working towards health equity. Everyone has the right to health. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have proposed a series of dangerous cuts to the federal budget. Specifically, the House Labor-HHS Subcommittee's draft FY 25 budget bill proposes the following cuts: -$190 million from Ryan White, -$214 million from CDC prevention funds, and -$15 million from the Minority HIV/AIDS Fund. As AIDS United has noted, we can't end the HIV epidemic with less resources.
