Transformational Nonprofit Leadership & Strategy | CEO of The Foodbank and Owner of Michelle Riley Consulting
Around 47.4 million Americans — roughly one of every seven — were food insecure during 2023, according to the USDA Economic Research Service Household Food Security study. That is a 40% increase in hunger since 2021, when many pandemic-era benefits ended, showing the importance of funding nutrition programs like #SNAP and #TEFAP in the #FarmBill. Fantastic discussion in Geneva today about the application of (meta)genomics for food quality and safety-related purposes Teagasc APC Microbiome Ireland, SFI Research Centre VistaMilk SFI Research Centre Food for Health Ireland SeqBiome
Great session this afternoon on "Genomics and Metagenomics Applied to Quality and Food Safety: Opportunities and Challenges" roundtable with Sigrid De Keersmaecker, Rachel Bayliss, Dominic O'Neil, Paul Cotter, Adrien Asséré, with Adrianne Klijn and Caroline Barretto as Convenors. Great idea to have a QR-code for asking question (very inclusive manner to have also the questions from the introvert persons in the audience), the session was very interactive. More than 100 persons were attending ! #iafp #foodsafety #mars #genomics #quality #ProudlyMars

🌎✨ The United States FDA announced on October 1, 2024, that the Human Foods Program is now in effect. Ideally, modernization efforts through this program will offer a safer food supply and limit the risks of foodborne illnesses. In early 2023, the FDA Commissioner, Robert M. Califf, M.D., announced a new vision for the Human Foods Program after an internal study by the FDA and an external review from the Reagan-Udall Foundation identified flaws in the existing prevention and response strategies for food safety systems. The two reviews identified multiple issues across the current system, including culture, structure, resources, data systems, emergency response systems and regulatory programs. #FoodSafety #HumanFoodsProgram #FDAAnnouncement #NutritionMatters #HealthierChoices #SafeFood #PublicHealth #FarmToTable #FDAUpdate #FoodStandards #FoodIndustryNews
