Op-shops, despite their benevolent mission, face an overwhelming influx of items. Astonishingly, only about 16% of received donations make it to the shop floor. The rest? They become rags, are consumed for energy production, or heartbreakingly end up in landfills. Consider a more strategic approach. We propose deliberate sorting and channelling of donations to specialised organisations. This method ensures your contributions resonate profoundly with those in need and align effectively with their requirements. Imagine sports gear finding new purpose through “Boots for All,” work attire empowering individuals through “Fitted for Work” or “Dress for Success,” children’s clothing supporting families via “3081 Angels,” baby wear reaching “Little Angels," and fabric and craft offering creativity with the help of "Creative Community Space". By fragmenting your contributions and directing them toward dedicated entities, you create a transformative narrative. Ever wonder what happens to the things you donate? Tim O’Neal and his all-star team at Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona gave a behind the scenes look at their operation. It is important to remember the three R's when shopping! #REDUCE = ask yourself if you really need to buy anything or can you work with what you already have. #REUSE = go thrift shopping and buy second hand whenever you can. And wear the heck out of what you buy before you #RECYCLE = donating. Remind your contacts that there are stores like Goodwill for clothing donation. Textiles do NOT go in curbside recycling. In the photo below a supervisor scans the clothes to determine their composition. These items did not sell in Goodwill stores after about a 6-week period. In addition to e-commerce, Goodwill sells material at a low cost per pound to a broker based on size and season and ships bales globally. #goodwill #ecommerce #textileindustry
