🛒 There's been controversy over loyalty member-only prices at supermarkets, with Which? claiming they are misleading and "potentially dodgy", and concerns that the promotions discriminate against non-members 💳 With a reported 20 million Clubcard holders and 18 million Nectar members, these promotions are more about reminding shoppers to swipe their card or scan their phone, as I told Lilith Foster-Collins for this week's The Grocer (read her article here: https://lnkd.in/e975PYZB) ✂ And, while customers are providing valuable data to supermarkets in the process, the Grocer found that they are rewarded with the average basket savings of 5.4% at Tesco and 6.5% at Sainsbury's. Other supermarkets definitely think this is a good idea, with Morrisons, Co-op, Iceland, Asda and others all experimenting with or rolling out similar schemes 💡 So, what do you think about loyalty prices - a good thing, or not? #retail #grocery #supermarkets #pricing #promotions #loyalty

Sad about the demise of online grocery retailer Supie. Nick Hogendijk MAICD of Hexis Quadrant eloquently explains the challenges faced from day one and why introducing competition into New Zealand's duopolistic grocery market is so hard. He spoke with Jack Tame on Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive and the link is below https://lnkd.in/gSs_ayRb #groceryretail #newzealand #competitionlaw #marketpower

Read my thoughts on Morrisons decision to enter the fray in the latest Grocery Gazette feature.📰👇🏻 With Morrisons having recently launched their Aldi UK / Lidl GB Price Match scheme, the big 4 full service supermarkets are now all trying to match the discounters. What impact do you think this has on customer loyalty? https://lnkd.in/eaMZYcVf #groceryretail #supermarkets #pricingstrategy
Was Morrisons right to jump on the price match bandwagon?

😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏 ...and shoppers have spoken. Loblaw Companies Limited took the biggest hit with their YIG and Loblaw banners taking the biggest drop as most respected #retailer, although No Frills remained fairly stable. Although $$$ is probably part of shoppers' thinking, we all know of the shenanigans the big retailers are trying to pull. Newsflash. Consumers aren't stupid nor are we soon to forget! We need to eat, so yes we have little choice to boycott these banners altogether, so we've shifted to the box stores where evidentally, their ratings were generally unscathed. Not sure what happened between 2021 to June 2023 for WM to make such a leap to #2. I guess their prices have remained reasonable in shoppers' eye? And the fact that they are now testing full on cashiers is a plus in my books. 👏 Lesson learned: even though you may be top dog now, brand equity is a long game and the more tone deaf one is, the more likely they are to fall from grace. No one is immune. There is always a competitor that will step up and do the right thing...and shoppers will follow. #retailers #grocers #ignorance #disrespect #puttheconsumerfirst #researchgeek 🤓

Fascinating article in Grocery Gazette regarding the opportunities for a discounter in the grocery space. Hoping to pick up a few of the stores on my next uk trip to see first hand the consumer experience and value proposition. An interesting highlight in the article with Asda having price matched key lines from Home Bargains reinforcing the focus on market positioning and value #discount #discounter #privatelabel #ownbrand #groceryretail #retail #retailstrategy #foodandbeverage #supplychainstrategy #growthstrategy #freshfood #valueproposition #value Prof. Consulting Group #supermarkets
🛒The likes of Poundland & Dealz, Home Bargains, B&M Retail and Poundstretcher Ltd. have all been making a concerted push in #grocery in recent years. How successful will the variety #discounters grocery expansion be, and how much of a threat will this pose to traditional #supermarkets? 👉With comment from Nick Gladding, Bryan Roberts and Sophie Carroll. "As a whole, Placer.ai found that California is a high-value grocery market thanks to robust visitation, and that in June, visits to its grocery stores were up 3.8% year-over-year, which was higher than the 1.9% climb nationwide. The state also has several distinctive geographic divisions, meaning different brands saw more foot traffic than others in each region." When it comes to grocery store visits so far this year, California has consistently outperformed the national average.
