An impressive €1.8 million has been raised to advance the revolution in disease detection. Seqstant stands at the forefront of pathogen diagnostics. Their goal? To revolutionize medical diagnostics and improve patient care worldwide.  🧬 Founded at Hasso Plattner Institute as a spin-off and supported by HPI School of Entrepreneurship, Seqstant GmbH has developed a groundbreaking software called #LiveGene, capable of identifying pathogens with just a single click. The expression “Last but not Least” was never more true than when the startups in PharmStars' current cohort were joined last week by Mark T. Rutledge, PhD of Sumitomo Pharma America, Inc. (SMPA) for the final Fireside Chat of our Spring semester. Mark visited our PharmaU program to engage our startups in a discussion about opportunities for digital health innovation at SMPA. At SMPA (as with many pharma), the landscape for digital health innovation continues to evolve. Mark helped the startups understand how both internal and external forces are influencing change and the impact change is having on SMPA's appetite for innovation. Though market conditions are dictating the need for heightened scrutiny on projects, Mark emphasized SMPA’s continues to focus on opportunities that will deliver value, save money, and help get therapies to the market quickly and to the patients who will benefit from them. SMPA is currently developing their promising oncology assets, which is a perfect fit with PharmStars' current cohort of startups focused on "Digital Innovations in Oncology." We are excited for Mark and his colleagues to meet our startups next month at our culminating Showcase Event where they will share their innovations with SMPA and our other pharma members. Three years ago, AnaCardio was awarded participation in the STHLM Life Scale-up project, an initiative funded by the European Regional Development Fund via the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillvaxtverket), and coordinated by Region Stockholm and KI Innovations AB. The program provided a platform for innovative SMEs in the life science sector to support their initial growth.   Our aim for applying to this program, was to enable the development of a novel treatment in heart failure, and now as we summarize our progress at the end of the project, we can happily report that it has been very successful. Within STHLM Life Scale-up, AnaCardio has received approximately 4 million SEK of non-dilutive funding through the program, but also tremendous support from the KI Innovations incubator and business coaches. During these three years we have successfully operationalized the company and recruited a highly experienced team of employees and consultants. Several milestones have been achieved, including securing the global rights to our lead program AC01, closing two rounds of fundraising, completing all regulatory and preparatory work to submit a clinical trial application for a clinical study in heart failure patients, all of which ultimately paved the way for our now ongoing phase 1b/2a study GOAL-HF1 in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.   For a start-up company, and particularly in such a complex and risky area as pharmaceutical development, this type of European, Governmental, and local support is of critical importance, as it provides innovators and entrepreneurs with both financial means and strategic support to help materialize their ideas. Furthermore, it provides validation and justification that could be crucial in attracting investors and business partners. Nesa Medtech a leading deep-tech medical device startup, has successfully closed an undisclosed amount in their Pre-Series A funding round. Led by KITVEN FUND 3Biotech, the round saw support from key investors like Malpani Ventures, SucSEED Ventures and esteemed High Net Worth Individuals, including Dr Dinesh Patel and Ganesh Subramaniam. This funding will drive crucial clinical efficacy studies, validating their micro-invasive treatment method for uterine fibroids and advancing the development of next-gen commercial devices. Why biotech spinouts are in the North East’s genes. 🔎🇬🇧 Ten years ago, I slipped in through a side door to the office block that rings Times Square in Newcastle, next to the Life Science Centre near the city’s central station, and spoke to Jonathan O’Halloran, the co-founder and chief scientific officer of QuantuMDx, a Newcastle-based biotech startup. I was there to write a story on QuantuMDx’s killer product, a Star Trek-like tricorder that would take blood or saliva samples and provide instantaneous results to diagnostic tests.
