Grassroots sport organisations may lack the capacity to enhance their events in terms of environmental sustainability 🌲. Because youth 👦🏼👧🏿 is a relevant stakeholder and a valuable resource in sports organisations, however they are often not empowered to take action or lack the resources to do so. Our document on environmental sustainability puts forward guidelines and discussion points to trigger good practices and offer recommendations for young sport leaders to implement preventive and reactive environmentally sustainable actions linked to sport and outdoor activities 🌳 https://shorturl.at/ghIR8 #SustainableDevelopment

Brilliant engagement and feedback from NGBs at this webinar with insightful speakers Julie Duffus, Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Jana Janotova & Dan Reading CEnv CMP. 🌱 UN Frameworks on climate and nature help sporting orgs come together as a coalition of the willing. 🌱 Big role for sports to play in creating demand for better products and services, influencing suppliers. 🌱 Think about where the conversation on climate change/sport was 10 years ago and then think about where it will be in 10 years time - the impacts on our sector will be even more significant. 🌱 Cannot decouple climate and nature, we all need to step up and do more. 🌱 Openess and transparency from all partners in the sporting system needed to support NGBs in delivering sustainability action. Loving how the UK Sport Accelerator sustainability support programme delivered by Useful Projects & Sporting Giants is nurturing a peer network amongst NGBs, creating spaces for learning, challenge and collective action. #teamoftomorrow #sustainability #sport
What a line up! Our Co-Founder Dan Reading CEnv CMP was privileged to host a fantastic panel for a UK Sport masterclass to explore some of the international frameworks that sport organisations can participate in. These frameworks demonstrate an organisations commitment as well as facilitating collaborations to use their platforms for engagement as well as tackling shared challenges. The masterclass was part of UK Sport's Accelerator programme which involves creating carbon footprints and environmental sustainability action plans for 40 National Governing Bodies, most of whom attended this masterclass. the Accelerator programme is being co-delivered by Sporting Giants and Useful Projects. Thanks to the panel for their presentations and the attendees for their engagement.

🌱 Exciting news from the sports industry and for the environment! According to Forbes, all clubs have committed to four impactful environmental measures, showcasing their dedication to sustainability. 🌍 Developing a common framework for action is an important commitment. The power of professional sports is key to ambition and success in this collective fight. Here are the measures : 1. Develop a robust environmental sustainability policy, by the end of the 2024/25 season 2. Creation of a position to lead the club’s environmental sustainability activities 3. Develop a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions dataset (scope 1, 2, and 3) by the end of the 2025/26 season 4. Support the development of a common framework for action via the Premier League Sustainability Working Group (PLSWG) Let's applaud these initiatives and continue to champion sustainability in professional sports! 💪🏼⚽ #PremierLeague #Sustainability #sport #ecology #environment #EnvironmentalAction Canadian Elite Basketball League National Hockey League (NHL) The Professional Women's Hockey League Players Association (PWHLPA) Canadian Football League Montréal Alliance CF Montréal Canadian Olympic Committee https://lnkd.in/gDuMcDnt

#Sustainability has exploded as a focus topic in #corporatecommunications in recent years. But are some industries under more pressure from the public than others to demonstrate their sustainability credentials and face up to climate change challenges? Our research team, led by Tom Foley, wanted to unpick to what extent the sports industry is affected by sustainability issues in public discourse. They ran an in-depth analysis of online discussion about Premier League football clubs to understand to what extent professional sports face public criticism around #climatechange and provide insights into how they might respond. In our brand new study you will find answers to these key research questions: 1. Drawing on the issue of short-haul flights in football as a microcosm, to what extent do people actually care about sustainability in sport in the present day? 2. How localised is tribal allegiance around sustainability in sport within online news and social media conversation? 3. To what extent do people focus on accountability within discussion around sustainability in sport? In collaboration with Green Sports Alliance, we cohosted a panel that put solutions led by social entrepreneurs and #sportchangemakers at the center of the sport and sustainability conversation. Check out the webinar and hear how #sportchangemakers believe the sport industry can take meaningful and systemic actions. Jürgen Griesbeck [Common Goal]: "If you want to be part of the solution, ask yourself [as a change leader], what are you doing in your position? And if you can't answer that, reach out to us." Nicole Rycroft [Canopy]: "Go for gold; be ambitious and bold for where you set the bar. It does not matter if you are a stadium manager, a food provider, a professional team; you can make a significant contribution to stabilizing our climate." Elliot Arthur-Worsop [Football For Future]: "Offer a training session for your staff - you might be a champion, but you can't change your organization by yourself. Activate other changemakers and have that critical conversation." Alison Tickell [Julie's Bicycle]: "It is not only about speaking to communities and the aggregate about their experience; it is also about getting hard-nosed about policy and calling for change." Share your favorite takeaways from the conversation below! Want to explore collaborations with social entrepreneurs to deepen your organization's climate commitment? Reach out to sportforchangemaking@ashoka.org.
Four key takeaways from yesterday's webinar with Ashoka, Common Goal, Julie's Bicycle, Football For Future, and Canopy: 1️⃣ Sustainability Partnerships with NGOs can leverage your ongoing green initiatives 2️⃣ Seek and secure a partnership that can help you track your supply chain emissions 3️⃣ Entertainment and sport entities need to work together to lower emissions at venues 4️⃣ Keep social and environmental justice a priority when developing new initiatives Thank you to our Board Chair, Aileen McManamon at 5T Sports Group for moderating and leading our Q+A portion of the webinar! 👏 Tune into the talk 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dt-scrKx #GreenSports #SustainableSport #GreenSportsAlliance #SocialInnovation #SocialImpact #Innovate

This piece represents in my mind the fundamental disconnect that exists within sport and how it mirrors wider society. In 5 years since the first Premier League sustainability table was published so much has happened at individual clubs, led by amazingly committed individuals. Meanwhile the decision makers and owners at those clubs alongside the leaders of leagues and associations are at best inactive but more often taking decisions that move the goalposts and actually make things harder. We asked the Premier League for comment on how their new “Summer Series” - 6 teams, 9 games in the US, with 1000s of fans flying over, fitted in with their words on sustainability and we received no comment. The statement contained within the piece refers to their sustainability commitment - the aim of which is the clubs, but as we can see they are already active. Football needs leadership, it needs organisations to come together & plan meaningful progress across the game not just at individual clubs. The sport is already being impacted, the FA estimate 150,000 grass roots games a year cancelled cause of poor quality pitches. Just this week we saw flooding cause the cancellation of the league two playoff match between Crawley and MK Dons, impacts are no longer restricted to winter months!
