Services need to understand that a single approach to prevention education does not work for everyone. We need greater understanding and more robust research looking at what works with specific cohorts, including neurodiverse.
Of the clients attending Bravehearts’ Turning Corners program for young people exhibiting HSB, 26.0% have an ASD diagnosis, with a further 9.3% suspected to have an ASD. This is a large overrepresentation when reports suggest around 2% of general population have a diagnosis (Autism Spectrum Australia, 2018). A range of factors relating to ASD may contribute to this overrepresentation; for example, emotional regulation, misinterpreting the nature of friendships, failure to understand social rules and conventions, misinterpretation of language and social cues, etc.
We were proud to have sponsored a critical review of research on the management of harmful sexual behaviours (HSB) in autistic adolescents, entitled: The Effectiveness of Interventions for Autistic Adolescents with Harmful Sexual Behaviors published in Trauma, Violence, & Abuse (https://lnkd.in/gfpgfYTM), conducted by our amazing colleagues at the Institute of Child Protection Studies, Sebastian Trew and Douglas Russell

Autistic young people usually have a very ‘black and white’ or literal way of understanding the people and world around them. This means that we tend to be trusting, and to believe what we hear and see. This can make it difficult for us to interpret what the people around us – in person or on screens – are thinking, feeling, doing or trying to communicate., To learn more about supporting the autistic young people in your life to navigate these challenges, visit the link in our bio or our website at www.notthenorm.com.au
