A lot of talk about tire treads and cool down laps. Thought I'll give a shoutout to the Technical and Sporting Regulations, too! #GeorgeRussell's W15 has been disqualified from the Belgian Grand Prix for being underweight. This infringement goes against Article 4.1 of the FIA’s Technical Regulations read with Article 35.3 of the Sporting Regulations (SR). In simple terms, Article 35.3 of the SR states that if a car that is weighed is less than the minimum weight prescribed by the Technical Regulations (TR), then that car is to be disqualified from the race results. As per Article 4.1 of the TR, the minimum mass of a car must be at least 798 kgs with the fuel drained. It is to be noted that the weight of the driver is to be added to the weight of the car without fuel to calculate the minimum mass for the purposes of Article 4.1. In Russell‘s case, his W15 weighed the minimum threshold of 798 kgs but with around 2.8 liters of fuel in the car. Once drained, the car was weighed again, only this time the weight of the car was 1.5 kgs less (796.5 kgs). As per the Regulations, once this weight discrepancy was noted, the FIA’s technical delegate referred the matter to the Stewards for their consideration. Therefore, as per the official decision rendered by the FIA stewards, Russell was deemed to be in violation of Article 4.1 of the TR and hence disqualified. This is done through a detailed process called Balance of Performance (BOP), which adjusts cars based on extensive data to ensure no single car has an unfair advantage. These regulators work a lot like referees in sports, setting rules and making sure everyone follows them to keep the competition fair and exciting. It's a tough job— They have to please teams, drivers, and manufacturers, making sure the race is competitive but also fair.
