As temperatures continue to increase across the country, employers must remember to protect workers from heat-related illnesses. ⚠️☀️ Proactive measures such as acclimatizing employees to warm weather work, providing shaded areas to rest and cool drinking water, and training to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat illnesses are crucial for employee safety. While OSHA has only just begun the rulemaking process for a federal standard, many states like California, Oregon, and Washington have existing heat rules. Cal/OSHA is reminding all employers to protect workers from heat illness as high temperatures are forecast for the first week of June across California. Temperatures are expected to reach over 100°F, peaking on Wednesday, June 5! To prevent heat illness, the law requires employers to provide outdoor workers fresh water, access to shade at 80 degrees, and, whenever requested by a worker, cool-down rest breaks in addition to regular breaks. Employers must also implement and maintain a written prevention plan and provide effective training for supervisors that includes recognizing the common signs and symptoms of heat illness, and what to do in case of an emergency.
