The Cookout is where Black people can feel safe and free to 'be' without the need to be concerned about white people's emotional safety, approval, or how they perceive us. It is the opportunity to gather, commune, and release in joy, dance, music, laughter, and Black family. It is where we catch up/gossip, celebrate each other's accomplishments, welcome those home from being locked up or those visting or returning home for other reasons, and where we pour liquor or other libations on the ground for those who died too soon. Here is a good place to seek approval for or introduce new people into the fold because it is only one of a few sacred Black spaces. The most important questions to consider at The Cookout is who cooked and who's invited so as to protect the energy. -Dr. Consuela Ward #Rootworker #Iyanifa #Educator

Read my take on St. Patrick's Day below!
Did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year? For the first time since I moved to LA nearly 10 years, I did. Well, nearly. I attended The Irish Film Festival LA at the Monica Film Center on Saturday 3/16 which got me in the spirit. Since I stopped drinking over 11 years ago, and even before that, I stopped celebrating the big fella’s day. It has become a gaudy nightmare of leprechaun costumes and green beer which has spread around the world. But this year I looked deeper into his history and discovered that he wasn’t even Irish. He was captured from England by Irish pirates and enslaved for 6 years. While in captivity he worked as a shepherd and became close to God, and most importantly, he learned the Irish language until he escaped. When he returned years later, knowing the people and language enabled him to peacefully convert Ireland from paganism to Christianity. Though I’m 5,000 miles away, meeting Irish folks at the film festival reminded me of one of the most powerful connections to our native homes... Language. And this month my story went the other way… An interview I did with San Francisco’s Irish Herald was republished by insideireland.ie. Read the full story in the link below to discover what else ties me to my other, faraway home. #irishamerican #losangeles #latimes #originstory #storytellingforbusiness #galway #journalism #insideireland #saintpatrick

On this day 15 years ago, 173 people lost their lives in Victoria’s 2009 Black Saturday fires. It is a day that will forever be remembered for its widespread devastation and lifelong impacts. From these tragic fires, much has been learned. A taskforce from the Centre’s predecessor, the Bushfire CRC, assembled researchers from fire agencies and research organisations around Australia to examine the key issues in the bushfires, assessing more than 1,300 homes, interviewing more than 600 residents, and taking more than 21,000 photos. The learnings from the Black Saturday fires are collated here (https://lnkd.in/gQm4pdeb) and form the basis for many of the fire- and resilience-related research carried out by the Centre, our Participants, and researchers today. https://shorturl.at/flzJ8

Great 2 days at our latest 100 Black Heads Retreat. My takeaways: 1. Widening the SEND lens so that the graduated approach and assess/plan/do/review become part of all that we do is a way to reduce the complexity and overwhelming nature of SEND given the current landscape. 2. Strategic and cultural leadership decisions about the graduated approach can reduce the burden on SENDCOs and increase their capacity to provide specialist support. 3. We don’t spend enough time thinking about the universal provision. The Difference inclusion framework seems like a good way to think about this. 4. My ethical principles and leadership behaviours need to be defined in order to allow me to make leadership decisions that will ultimately align with the inclusive vision that I will have when I’m a Head. GREENSHAW LEARNING TRUST - seem to be doing some great work in this space led by Amelie. Excited to take what I’ve learnt to my new role at Future Academies. Also had a great time talking about the future of the network. Watch this space! Djamila Boothman Claudenia Williams Daniel Opoku Aaron Collingwoode-Williams Sr.
As the sun sets on a long but wonderful day with the 100 Black Heads network I'm reflecting on the essential nature of stepping out of the everyday and connecting. There's a special energy that's palpable when connecting is done right, and for a purpose. And the purpose for this group is clear... Become head teachers within the next 3 years. Today we focused on leading SEND and alternative provision and heard from sector experts Gill LaRocque, Amelie Thompson and Louise Ling. So much rich knowledge shared and deep conversations exploring this vital area of education. Members are still connecting now as the sun sets but I had to sneak off to find my pillow. Feeling so energised and excited to discuss the next steps for this network tomorrow. Martin Fleetwood your ears will be burning.
