According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “Social determinants of health (#SDOH) are non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life.” Everyone has social determinants of health that factor into their overall well-being, but not everyone is born with the same privileges or advantages. Learn more about the work of Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute's #HHCJ (Health, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice) team and how staff members Moncies Franco Sr., Jessica Jeruzal, Kate Diaz Vickery, & Tyler Winkelman are working to change this narrative to level the playing field. #structuralracism #stigma #healthcare

Implementing SDOH screening in emergency departments could offer an insightful lens into societal health dynamics, both known and yet to be revealed. Closely analyzing SDOH at a population level can help providers clearly see disparities and potentially even work toward a path moving forward to lessen or eliminate these disparities. This approach can shed light on immediate healthcare needs while laying the groundwork for targeted interventions that could mitigate future emergency department utilization spikes and enhance community health resilience at large. #SDOH #Healthcare #PopulationHealth
