The Untapped Talent Pool: Helping Immigrants Thrive in the US Workforce As an HR professional, I'm passionate about building strong teams. Recently I moved back to Minnesota from Texas where I lived in a community enriched by incredible immigrants – my neighbors from Guatemala, Cuba, and Pakistan. All brilliant individuals with in-demand skills like engineering, yet underemployed – a story all too common for many immigrants in the US. All the majority want to do is work and work hard! This paradox struck a chord. Here were highly qualified individuals struggling to find their footing, while companies fight to fill those very roles. Imagine the potential if we bridged this gap! Statistics tell the story: according to a National Academies report, "immigrants represent 33% of US engineers and 27% of scientists", yet face barriers to utilizing their full potential. Yesterday I met an inspiring Minnesotan who started a non-profit specifically addressing this issue, I'm fired up to help find solutions. Here's some ideas how we can all play a part: Spread Awareness: Let's break down unconscious bias in hiring practices. Promote diversity and inclusion initiatives within our companies. Upskilling & Recognition: Support programs that offer credential evaluation, bridge the skills gap, and translate foreign experience. Mentorship & Networking: Pair immigrants with experienced professionals for guidance and build a strong support network. By creating a welcoming environment and fostering immigrant talent, we not only enrich our workplaces but also strengthen the US economy. Lessons from Supported Employment Models – The Value of Placing Job Quality Centre-stage By Stephen Bevan, Principal Associate, Institute for Employment Studies, UK While not everybody will agree with Noel Coward’s view that ‘work is more fun than fun’, many people find enough positive aspects of their work to motivate them and to allow them to get a feeling of fulfilment from their jobs. Of course, being in a job offers a range of potential benefits, especially when compared with being unemployed. Work provides income, social connection, opportunities to learn and deploy new skills, the chance to contribute to an organisation with a wider purpose and the chance to sustain both our physical and psychological well-being. But not all jobs are fulfilling, enjoyable, safe, healthy or secure. Indeed, there are those who still argue that the grinding toil and indignity of some jobs are necessary if work is to help build character and self-discipline, or to be a part of a citizen’s obligations to their fellows and to be part of the quid pro quo of receiving the protection of the social safety net.
