Last month, Frank, Smruti, Cayla, Rachel, and Casey were busy at the Clemson College Fair and RPI College Fair spreading the word about architecture+, who we are, and what we are about. Thank you to @clemsonuniversity @rpiofficial and the students who stopped in at our table so we could chat! If you missed it and are interested in learning more, please follow the link in our bio for more information. Cayla and Dash also put together a fantastic STEM Presentation at HVCC for high school students interested in pursuing careers in the field. We thank @hudsonvalleycc and the future architects, engineers, and designers who attended!

Our Winchester, Virginia plant hosted professors and students from the University of Notre Dame and Clemson University to set up and pour specimens for the Precast Buckling-Restrained Braced (BRB) Frame Research Project. These were some of the most complicated pieces that our drafters, engineers, and plant associates have seen to date. The level of care shown by all, including our two Winchester summer interns who were able to be involved in this unique work, was second to none. After months of meetings, analytical work, developing drawings, lots of work to refine the details, and securing the materials needed, we successfully produced these frame specimens that will be tested at the University of Notre Dame in the coming months. The Precast BRB Frames research is a major, multi-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation, PCI, and many precast producers in conjunction with University of Notre Dame, Clemson University, and University of California San Diego to develop and codify a new seismic force-resisting system. The research consists of analytical work at Clemson, laboratory testing at UND, and shake table testing at UCSD. This major research project was born out of three PCI Jenny Fellowships that were awarded by the PCI R&D Council to Notre Dame and Clemson. Through the collaboration of those teams and advisory groups, we are seeing code changing research which is exciting to all who are involved. #thankyou #leaders #precastconcrete #educators #metromont

This story highlights the significant impact that #CareerandTechnicalEducation (#CTE) programs can have on students. Phelps Architecture Construction and Engineering High School's engineering program has successfully ignited students' passion for #STEMcareers, with many drawing inspiration from the traditional professions of their family members. This connection to their family history adds a layer of depth and meaning to their studies, fostering a greater appreciation for the evolution of these professions. It's noteworthy how the school's #CTEprogram bridges the gap between traditional and #moderncareers. By incorporating elements of traditional crafts like blacksmithing into their #engineeringcurriculum, Phelps helps students see the relevance and #continuityofskills across generations. This approach not only honors the past but also prepares students for the future by equipping them with a versatile skill set. The success of Phelps' program underscores the importance of partnerships between schools and local employers. These collaborations provide students with real-world exposure and valuable insights into various #careerpaths. Moreover, they give employers a chance to connect with potential #futureemployees and understand the evolving needs and interests of the younger generation. One key takeaway from this story is the need for continued funding and support for CTE programs. As Olatundun Teyibo points out, these programs are essential for providing equal opportunities for all students, especially those from underserved communities. By investing in high-quality CTE programs, we can empower students to make informed #careerchoices and potentially reduce the burden of #collegedebt. The dedication and passion of both the students and teachers at Phelps are truly inspiring. The students' persistence, #academicgrowth, and willingness to take risks speak volumes about the supportive and engaging #learningenvironment that the school has fostered. Similarly, the teachers' commitment to providing comprehensive support and creating a fun and engaging #learningexperience is commendable.

When we invest in the education and future success of individuals, we are investing in making dreams a reality, making education accessible, reducing student loan debt, and empowering the next generation of leaders to reach their full potential. Anna's story of scholarship makes me think of my favorite quote: "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade we do not expect to sit". "The opportunities to make an impact and be successful, whether in research or your professional and personal life, are endless.” Anna Cetera '24 seized every opportunity URI had to offer thanks to scholarship support. As an international engineering student, she has been able to explore research, volunteer, and be an ambassador for the engineering community. And it was collective university support that lead her to grab on to the next opportunity—returning to campus this fall to pursue her master’s degree in electrical engineering.
