Today’s #WeLeadComms honoree is communication and marketing leader María Cecilia. Here, she discusses her experiences: “A marketing and communications professional with over 16 years of experience. I have dedicated the last five years to educational marketing. "Today, I work, and my biggest challenge is to strengthen the reputation, and brand of The English School, a leading private school in Colombia. “When I began the search for a school for my son, I was concerned about the dehumanization of admission processes, which seems to be a consequence of the high demand for quality education. At this moment, the person, and above all, the child, disappear. Families come with hopes of finding a school where their child can grow, and where parents can feel secure. However, in this competitive environment, it is the school that chooses the child, not the other way around. “This led me to reconsider my career in marketing and communications, which I had working with important national and international brands for 11 years. I decided to use all my knowledge to create a safe space for parents and children looking for a school. "Transforming the admission process into a warm experience, creating connections, and letting families live the school's purpose. Transforming cold, institutional communication with a warmer tone. Recovering the human face of an experience that is hardly only commercial. In choosing a school for your child, all the steps are crucial, but above all, it's how we communicate them, and how you can connect with the school. “My greatest learning and achievement in the education sector, have been creating stronger connections by working in transforming continuously the process into a people-oriented process. To transform, it is essential to create great experiences and effective communication, while also establishing a clear brand value proposition. Where values, strengths, and differentiators are conveyed through closeness to families. In the experience, both students and their families participate to define what it means to be part of a school and a community. Ultimately, it's about recognizing the value of working for and with families, and not just a product or service." +++ The Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence’s professional designation program offers professionals with a passion for excellence, contribution, and learning a new way to demonstrate that passion and commitment to their employers and the marketplace. The CSCE is offering three levels of designation for its members: Fellow, Graduate and Member, based on one’s professional achievement, experience and education. CSCE designations remain active during the course of one’s participation as a CSCE member. CSCE membership includes access to exclusive content and networks, opportunities to participate in professional and research projects, and discounted virtual and in-person training and events. As an accredited PR practitioner, I've always believed in the power of staying current and continuously refining our craft. Today, I want to highlight the importance of CPD - not just for ourselves but for our entire professional community. Reflecting on my own CPD experiences, I've found that each endeavour, whether it's attending workshops, completing courses, or engaging in events, has enriched my skills and expanded my perspective. It's a journey that's not only personally fulfilling but also essential for staying ahead in an ever-evolving industry like ours. So, let's continue to champion #CPD, not just for ourselves but for the collective advancement of our profession. Our student marketer community was established in early 2023 with less than 10 students. Initially, there was confusion about our purpose—whether we were a student club. Today, we are a diverse team of over 80 students from more than 20 nationalities, continuing to grow and expand our presence at James Cook University Singapore Campus. Our mission is deeply personal. As a team of students who were once new to Singapore, we understand the challenges of adapting to a new lifestyle and culture. We aim to volunteer our time and share our experiences to help prospective students and parents navigate life in Singapore and with James Cook University Singapore. We do this because we love to help and give back to our university. Volunteering isn’t easy. We balance our commitments alongside a demanding academic schedule by creating informative videos, sharing our experiences, and participating in university activities. Our president, Mr Vivek Vardan Reddy, and social media marketing executive, Ms Yee Jiai, produced a video below showcasing our community's journey. Their energy, commitment, and time spent editing and adding subtitles shine through. To assist prospective students and parents, we’re hosting a webinar titled 'Authentic Conversations: Student Marketers' Survival Guide - Tips for Adapting to Life in Singapore'. We hope our insights will aid your decision to join our university. Follow us on social media for updates! Thanks for the feature, UST-Communication Arts Students' Association's CASA Chronicle! I talked about the significance of our Quill Award win, the importance of supportive mentors and collaborative teams, and why our "Whys" are the keys to our success. An excerpt from the article: "[T]here is a sense of achievement and fulfillment because winning the Quill Awards is an acknowledgment of the progress that they have made and the impact they have as communication students, that everything that they went through was worth it. The #QuillAwards affirmed their passion and commitment to the field of communication and media. "His advice to passionate communication students is to proactively seek opportunities for learning, growth, and skill development. He suggested taking on new projects, joining volunteer organizations or interest groups, such as UST Tiger Media Network, and engaging in extracurricular activities that align with one’s interests and goals in the future."

The new Engagement feature allows you to keep track of alumni participation in school activities. Create events and note which alumni are in attendance so you have a record of how your engagement efforts are tracking. Keeping a centralised record of alumni involvement will also make future event planning simpler since you will be able to appropriately target alumni based on their engagement history.

I was surprised, delighted and very honoured to be awarded the Membership of the College of Fellows of Communication and Public Relations Australia this week. The fellowship recognises eminence in the communication and public relations profession, contribution to our association and the wider industry, ethical conduct and pro bono service to community organisations. Looking forwarding to playing my part in a better future as part of the group who guide our professional ethics and standards. This is despite the fact my introduction to "public relations 101" at uni (as a business student, not a PR or comms one) was a shocker. We were taught: 1. PT Barnum invented PR and was to be admired 2. Sparkle (not substance) won the day and earned marks 3. And (direct quote from one lecturer) "big tits and blond hair helped me get where I am". Forsaking further valuable knowledge about PR, I veered towards career death by leaning into management, finance, and economics subjects, developing a lifelong love of quantitative methods in market research, and kept my super short, dark hair and (apparently) inadequate body shape. Fortunately I've been graced with excellent colleagues and mentors such as Vanessa Liell who role modelled leadership and excellence in the profession. And who overlooked my lack of education and unsuitable appearance. Here’s to substance over form. That probably should have been the headline from PR101 in the 90s.
