We’re celebrating World Animal Month at the Endangered Wolf Center! Wolves play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy, balanced ecosystem. One of the most endangered wolf species, the American Red Wolf, is a key example of this. Sadly, fewer than 20 remain in the wild today. Their survival has been made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of wolf conservation centers and other zoological facilities, including the Endangered Wolf Center, which has helped reintroduce this once-extinct-in-the-wild species back to their native range. 👏🏻 Rewarding Ranchers 👏🏻 The Migratory Big Game Initiative allows landowners to stack Farm Bill payments from BOTH the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Farm Service Agency. It also offers a new incentive for producers in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana: a habitat lease that provides annual payments for landowners who maintain intact rangelands for migrating wildlife. The USDA is providing a package of investments in key conservation programs, which includes funding to support increased staffing capacity and the deployment of streamlined program application processes for agricultural producers and landowners. 🐺 Wolf Awareness Week, celebrated from 22 to 28 October, offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the vital role these magnificent predators play in our ecosystem. The time to make our voices heard in favour of this extraordinary animal is now. 📣 Together with the European Environmental Bureau and 300 other organisations, we are calling on EU Member States to strengthen, rather than weaken, the protection of wolves. This coalition opposes the European Commission's proposal, already approved by the EU Council to reduce the level of protection of wolves under the Bern Convention. 👉 Instead, greater efforts are required to promote coexistence with large carnivores through preventive measures that would allow us to protect the results achieved in wolf conservation, the result of several decades of work. The prevalence of so many birds, reptiles, insects and plants in illegal trade is often overlooked in favour of the heavyweights. The better-known, well-loved iconic species are being viciously and unsustainably hit by #wildlifetraffickers but sadly the focus of #combattingwildlifecrime efforts continuously needs to be expanded, and with high resolution. Studies like this draw vital attention to the scale of #trafficking across countless #bird species - almost half of which were revealed to be involved in the trade. It shows that ongoing, deep-diving research is incredibly important in helping to inform, and evolve, strategies to protect them, and disentangle, disrupt and dismantle the workings of #transnationalorganisedwildlifecrime. Keep up the great work in the research space. These studies, and the #intelligence constantly and tirelessly being gathered, can make a difference. #IWT #globalcrime #corruption

How well do you know your tracks? Our wolverine program works with the Cascades Wolverine Project (CWP) in Washington State. CWP uses track photos submitted by the public to understand wolverine distribution in the Cascades mountain range. But how good are these data? These photos of wildlife tracks are used to test wildlife professionals, such as those at CWP, on their ability to identify the species associated with tracks.
