Why is building decarbonization important to you?
Shaimaa: My passion and expertise lie at the confluence of affordability, social equity and climate change. It's true that building decarbonization is pivotal to achieving our net-zero emission targets, but it is also closely intertwined with tackling affordability challenges. Done right, building decarbonization can ensure that vulnerable groups are not disproportionately burdened by the transition and that they are not the last adopters of green technologies.
Why are you participating in the #NationalBuildingDecarbonizationForum?
Shaimaa: Driven by a commitment to merge the realms of social equity, affordability, and climate change, this is an opportunity to share insights from my research program at the IRPP, which explores innovative policy solutions at the nexus of these areas. I aim to learn from the conversations and to help shape a more equitable and inclusive approach to building decarbonization, ensuring the vulnerable aren’t forced to make trade-offs between essentials like housing, food, clean energy, and transit.
Why are you participating in the National Building Decarbonization Forum
Shaimaa: Every phase of my life—from an international student to a skilled immigrant and then a new Canadian—has offered me a firsthand look into public policies' intricacies and their impacts on individuals. This journey has fueled my passion for developing policies that connect on a personal level, and that they be as humane and equitable as they are effective. Decarbonization policies need to be informed by rigorous in-depth research and an understanding of their wider societal implications.
