This means that the selection of these materials represents one of the strongest levers we have to reduce the carbon footprint of our products and offer low emission solutions to our customers. What an inspiring second day at the CIEX - Chemical Innovation Exchange event! The day started with Sibel Selcuk sharing her powerful experience at The Heritage Group on how innovation must happen from the top and how 'innovation is not necessarily invention' (she had a great cartoon about this!)   Followed by David Hatrick from Huntsman Corporation who gave tips on how to create the agile R&D organisation of the future while focusing on ‘delivering value for our owners’.   Dr. Jens Kubitschke from LEVACO Chemicals GmbH continued on the agility theme urging us to ‘’break down the organisation silos’’ and build cross-functional and diverse teams.   We also had a fascinating panel discussion on orchestrating an innovation re-bound in Europe. While ‘innovation theatre’ was decried by Markus Bold, head Chemovator at BASF who insisted on the need to ‘connect your research world to your customer world’, Pierre-Alain Weiss from Chemische Fabrik Budenheim urged us to switch from customer-centricity to market-centricity.   Finally Marianne Lyngsaae from Brenntag and her Danish GEAR project on Circular Economy in the Chemical industry were particularly inspiring, showing that it is possible and actually happening and there is even funding available for it! As John Metselaar, chair for the day, asked, "what are you going to do now?" Our latest #CMI #newsletter is out now: One topic: Creating Net-Zero Value Chains First established in 2019 within the World Economic Forum (WEF) as the Low-Carbon Emitting Technologies (LCET) initiative, the CEO-led Global Impact Coalition (GIC) was officially launched as an independent entity by seven global chemical companies in November 2023. Focused on reducing carbon emissions and advancing circularity in the #chemical industry, the GIC provides a platform to co-create new business models, develop proof-of-concept pilots, and scale-up new technologies. One of the projects to accelerate the transformation to a low-carbon and circular future is the recently launched R&D Hub, aimed at advancing new plastic recycling methods. In an interview with CHEManager International, Charlie Tan, CEO of GIC, explains the initiative’s scope and describes some key activities. Takeaways of Day 1 of the CIEX - Chemical Innovation Exchange - event in Frankfurt ⚗ : Sharon Todd from SCI® Where Science Meets Business set the tone with ''We are facing a new industrial revolution […] It needs to be circular […] it needs to be digital […] and it needs to be sustainable!’’ Pascal Chalvon Demersay from Solvay continued on the same topic with ‘the biggest challenge is Scope 3 [emissions], Scope 3 means we need to collaborate’’. Echoed by Martin Vollmer from BMI Group who emphasised: ''cross-industry collaboration is key to success''. Lars Boerger from Neste urged for incentivising the use of non-fossil sources, and Andreas Kicherer suggested exploring new business models like chemical leasing. However, Dr. Kicherer's sobering revelation that only 9% of all chemicals are part of a circular system, leaving 91% to end up in the environment, was a stark reminder of the challenges ahead. Several speakers also highlighted the 40,000 pages of regulation, which Dr. Rainer Otter Otter from BASF passionately discussed as a significant obstacle to innovation in Europe.
