We often work within regeneration contexts in our consultancy work. Frequently people are focusing on buildings and infrastructure in regeneration plans, but we think it's important to talk about cultural regeneration too. People and activity need to be a part of regeneration if it's going to have the impact it should. So it's great to see this article from Arts Council England on cultural regeneration in the West Country. #LetsCreate #CulturalRegeneration #CulturalDevelopment #CulturalConsultancy https://lnkd.in/euvTuDu9

#MeanwhileUse is a possible solution for some #VacantProperties in #Cork #CorkCity #Ireland 'Although meanwhile uses may be temporary, if delivered successfully through addressing specific social need, they can be the catalysts of lasting legacies. Landowners [still] often overestimate the risks and undervalue the benefits of giving over a site to meanwhile use. This is largely due to a lack of guidance, policy direction and wider acceptance of meanwhile as a valid development tool.' Bands, promoters, crafters, makers, artists, community groups, voluntary organisations, sports, fitness, health, musicians, collectives, start-ups... if you would consider #MeanwhileUse as an option for space in the future please check out this short #survey: https://lnkd.in/e-HeuMGU Value from vacant spaces #policychange Prevent #dereliction #DerelictIreland
Who needs space for culture, art, film, sports, music, play or any form of community activity? Last week we hosted a very successful first of its kind meanwhile use agora, using our art exhibition and installations on dereliction, liveability, good design (and more) as a back drop (at Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Cork City). At the event our directors Jude Sherry and Frank O'Connor made the case for meanwhile use as a policy intervention to support the circular economy in Cork city, across Ireland, and globally. Then Michael O'Sullivan launched a short survey to gather much needed data on the demand for such a policy intervention in Cork city. Targeting creative, start-up or voluntary organisations who would consider meanwhile use space as an option to start-up or expand the survey is available here: https://lnkd.in/e9MzKnAJ We believe we have a wonderful opportunity to build a Cork City that works for everyone, from an 8 to an 80 year old. Lets grab it so everyone can have a home, place to play and create and access to fair, just meaningful work. It makes sense on all levels. #CorkCity #MeanwhileUseSurvey2024 #VacantIreland #DerelictIreland #RestPlayWork #PolicyChange #GoodDesign #Tiche #CircularEconomy

Why access matters.
Freelance journalist / ghostwriter / author / lecturer / PR & thought leadership. Former Features Editor of The Yorkshire Post.
Some important points raised here by Sharon Canavar, chief executive of Harrogate International Festivals, about local communities, and not just those who live in big cities, having access to top class free art & culture. We know that art & culture is good for our wellbeing & creativity & encourages a sense of civic pride, so surely we want as many people as possible to enjoy it - no matter where they live. #art #culturematters #harrogate https://lnkd.in/eu7zVGWf

Consultant, expert and researcher (PhD) specialized in cultural and creative strategies for places and organizations.
A strong case against how culture is being managed by UK cities: “Yet, in the twenty- first century, the local city council has entirely embraced the redevelopment of much of the city centre by commercial property developers to the extent that any meaningful con-tribution to nurturing the “culture” for which the city was so long renowned has entirely evaporated. What often remains, in terms of cultural provision, is a hollow and commo-dified pastiche of a once vibrant and organic counterculture – which the council and its partners trade on relentlessly to lever yet more inward investment (Gillespie et al, 2021; Russell, 2020). Yet, while “entrepreneurial” Manchester has “pragmatically” embraced commercial cultural regeneration, many of its public cultural infrastructures such as youth and community services, leisure centres, parks, theatres, small music venues, concert halls, rehearsal rooms, meeting spaces, and affordable small business pre-mises have suffered cuts, been sold off, or else significantly disappeared as a consequence of this “pragmatism” and a decade of centrally imposed austerity.” https://lnkd.in/gi3ApSw8

How the Hamilton2030 Commonwealth Games bid inspired Community Regeneration. Things are quiet now. Everything is in transition. Doubts and questions remain, about, well, everything. But something notable happened today in the City Of Hamilton. The start of something significant. While the dream of bringing the 2030 Commonwealth Games home for its centenary may be in abeyance, the vision of a movement of community stakeholders united around the goal of transformation and regeneration remains. And has witnessed new life today in the launch of an initiative inspired by the Commonwealth Sporting movement. Not surprisingly, it is called: "The Commons". The Commons is an initiative of local stakeholders redeveloping the city's key entertainment assets - those that would be central to any Commonwealth Games - and leveraging the effort to promote regeneration and revitalization throughout the community. The themes, values and ambitions of the Gaming movement have now manifest in the private sector's resolve to bring change directly and immediately to this city through infrastructure and compelling new programming - at its expense. This is what the Games movement can and has inspired. Whether or not the Games ever come back here. That flame burns brightly in all of us. And will not extinguish. Whether you are from Hamilton or not, we invite you to keep the Games dream alive by engaging and following the Commons initiative at the link below. Hamilton - Get ready for something big! 🎉 Introducing The Commons: a revolutionary initiative set to infuse new vitality into Hamilton, igniting the city's evolution into a premier cultural destination in Canada. It's poised to become the future home of our nation's most spectacular live performance venue. Having acquired the rights to redevelop Hamilton's premier entertainment assets, The Hamilton Urban Precinct Entertainment Group Consortium ("HUPEG"), has recruited Oak View Group (the global leader in entertainment venue development) and Live Nation Entertainment (the world's leading live entertainment company). Together, we will revitalize three iconic Hamilton venues; turning them into bustling cultural hotspots and powering the growth of our community. Beyond the transformation of the physical assets, we have assembled a large and growing group of private sector, not-for-profit and educational leaders for this. Please explore: https://lnkd.in/g2wd3FaA A huge shoutout to our incredible partners: Carmens Group, Alinea Land Corporation, Meridian Credit Union, LIUNA, Golden Horseshoe Enterprises, Live Nation Entertainment, and Oak View Group. The results are in...and the City of Subiaco is leading the way! 😀 The latest MARKYT Community Scorecard survey, which was completed by almost 1000 community members, has revealed the City as industry leaders in 17 areas - the most of any WA local government. The areas include playgrounds, parks and reserves; maintaining built heritage and identity; and festivals, events, art and cultural activities. The City also received a 99 per cent positive rating as a place to live. Mayor David McMullen said, "The score for 'Leadership by the Mayor and Councillors' has increased for the third cumulative year to a 79 per cent positive rating. As a 'governing organisation', the City scored an 87 per cent positive rating. Good governance has been a core priority for me and this Council; and to see the results in these categories therefore serves as especially positive reinforcement and motivation." Check out this video to see our Scorecard highlights, and read more of the results here: https://bit.ly/462gw9d

Preserve Summerhall as a Cultural Hub in Edinburgh! Please sign this petition to protect Edinburgh's cultural heritage and preserve spaces like Summerhall for future generations. The potential sale of Summerhall, a vital cultural institution in the city, is deeply concerning. To the petition: https://chng.it/F88BGtwb6k Since its transformation from the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in 2011, Summerhall has been a thriving multi-arts venue, hosting over 110 companies, galleries, studios, and community spaces, such as the Artiscience Library, which international Bioartist Oron Catts, University of Western Australia, called "a unique treasure-house of inspiration”. To convert Summerhall into apartments or student flats would not only strip away a crucial cultural asset but also diminish the unique character of the community. We urge to explore alternative solutions that preserve Summerhall's role as a hub for creativity, innovation, and community engagement. Whether through community ownership, partnerships with cultural organizations, or other innovative approaches, there are viable alternatives that can ensure Summerhall's continued success. #art #innovation #creativity #galleries #studios #communityengagement #communityspace #culturalinstitute #STEAM #libraries #artiscience
