  • Today is the first day of Harmony Week 2025; a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, stories and traditions that make up our vibrant community. We asked Mayor David McMullen about his family history which spans a number of continents and cultures. "I have not had to overcome the tyranny of distance to find myself in Subiaco (specifically, Shenton Park) with my wife and kids. I grew up just the "other side" of Salvado Road, in Wembley; as the crow flies, almost exactly north of where I live now. But go back a few of generations, and the story takes you to two distinct continents. Mum is of Chinese heritage, from Malaysia. On Dad's side, we have: a Captain of a ship that sailed from Ireland to bring some of the first settlers to Augusta; a Pensioner Guard who was posted to the barracks whose brick archway we all drive past every time we head south on the freeway; and some of the pioneering farming families of Toodyay and Northam. This mixed heritage shows through in our family holidays these days, which have taken us to places including the port city of Plymouth in Devon, southwest England - to trace the footsteps of my Great Great Grandfather (also named David McMullen); South East Asia (pictured); and many quintessential camping and caravanning trips to the southwest of WA."

  • A group of our staff visited the Subiaco Women's Shed this afternoon, to keep the #InternationalWomensDay celebrations going 😍 The women's shed is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting women's physical and mental health. Currently based at Earthwise Community, their vision is to help women discover and acknowledge their potential by creating a safe environment built on friendship, mentorship, and support. The City is proud to support the shed through its Community Development Grants program.
